Thread: Radar Effects Module Needed
I like the radar system and I think it's very well done, however, it's infalable - it always works. I think it would be a great asset to the game if we had a droid module that is able to effect the radar screen. The purpose here is to add a level unpredictability to the game in PvP. Generally, the only way you'll get into PvP is if you're overt, in which case it was your express intent to join in the PvP action. So, I can't see giving players the opportunity of sneaking up on others any less of a problem than camping shuttle ports (if you don't want to be attacked, don't be overt!). Consiquently, here are my thoughts:
# Radar Jamming: Makes all radar in its raduis flicker and be fuzzy. (Low power comsumption)
# Radar Stealth: Makes anyting with a 5m radius (around the droid) dissapear off the radar completely. (Med power comsumption)
# Radar Spoofing: Randomly generates friendlies on oposing factions radar, while cloaking unfriendlies. (High power comsumption) - The idea here is to cause confusion durring a battle.
If you check out my original post, you'll notice that my suggestion for "Self Destruct Module" actually made it into the live game! I can't really take credit for the idea though, I simply took it straight from the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars roleplaying books... Anyhow, there is also a list of other modules to be considered there, as well as many other good ideas from various others.

Straker_Atrella, regardless of what options you put into the game, people can still do this. If SOE took that sort of attitude 5 years ago we wouldn't have ANY MMPORPGs from them.
"this can be made into a griefing tool"
How?
If you don't want to take part in PVP, don't declare a faction.
If you want to declare a faction, understand TEFs and watch you're butt!
Simple.
Huh?
I really don't understand this post. Right now there is very little reason for 3rd party aps. First because many of the things they provide are already in the game. Second because there would really be nothing to gain. Everything is already there to be seen.
I PVP almost every night, I understand TEFs, and I enjoy faction battles. I really don't see what my post had to do with your comments.
The Devs have been asked before about removing the radar, adding stealth and other "cool" features. 3rd party aps was their main reason for not doing it.
The second you add a "true advantage" to having a 3rd part aps, such as the origional suggestion here, people will spend the time to make one. Then the cheaters will have an edsge, and the honest players wont.
Unless your post meant that I should openly accept cheating as part of PVP and factional fighting, which I strongly do not accept that.

What part of, "regardless of what features an online game has, you can still use packet sniffers to cheat" do you not understand?
Right now, this very minute, I could have my two programing friends find a way to quadruple all of my stats, make my droids have 52,000HAM and cancel your account. It would be only a matter of time before they figured it out. Once they did, it would likely take SOE weeks to fix the hack. Bottom line here is, if it weren't for the fact Pat and Adrian have better things to do with their time, I could have them find way to give me more of an advantage than you'd ever imagine.
Did you ever play Diablo online? Hacked all over the place and Blizzard couldn't even keep up with it.
So, in the end, because it's possible to gain an advantage in the way you are refering to already, I do not see how adding radar features would make this any worse.
Living your life in fear of might happen will have you end your life wondering what did happen.

That is incorrect, in order for you to do the things you mentioned, such as qudrupling your stats or giving your droid 52k HAM, they would need to hack the SWG servers. All of that information is stored there.
Sure they could make a program that made it LOOK like you had that on your computer, but all of the real information is stored on the Servers. That's the big difference between Diablo and SWG, in SWG, your computer simply receives and interprets information, then displayed it. In Diablo, the information was also stored on your computer to change. You would need to hack the actual SWG servers to do that. Perhaps you should talk to your Hacker friends and let THEM tell you it's not possible.
If it was so easy, you don't think people would be hacking an open Jedi slot then just selling the account on Ebay?
SWG has done a pretty decent job at making it where packet sniffers and interpreters can't really give an edge, everything is open to see. No hidden secrets. At least currently.
