you should probably read the stickied posts at the top for details. but I can give some quick answers.
1) yes and no. no crafting profession is going to be able to compete with a player who uses all his skill points on combat professions in terms of raw combat abilities. this is true of all crafting professions. but that said, crafter's do have enough skill points to master one other elite combat profession if they juggle the skill points appropriately. DE's have it especially hard though, becuase it is difficult to be a DE without also mastering artisan (it is possible, but it is difficult), and that means you have even fewer skill points left over for combat skills.
2) droids are used for combat, item storage, data storage, expanding the skills of medics, scouts, and elite entertainers, among other things.
3) yes droids can be sold
4) yes there is a market for them. it is possible to make millions as a DE if you work hard at it, but when compared against the market for weapons and armor, the droid market is very small. weaponsmiths and armorsmiths make much much more money than DEs do.

With difficulty, but Combat Droids can help tank for you and defend you if you are attacked. If you keep a ready supply of repair kits then you can keep healing them while they do the killing

Depends, Storage, Mobile Crafting Stations, Healing bonuses, Entertainer Effects, Advertising, Bounty Hunting, Harvesting
3) Can droids be sold?
Yes, in approximately 2 months I have made 2 Mill selling my droids on Corellia
4) Is there a market for them?
See above, depends on what you make, start with checking out other Droid Vendors, and Custom Orders see what the demand is
5) Why should I become a DE?
Because you get to make some of the prettiest pets in the game, and can colour them whatever you like, and at the end of the day, they're droids! How cool is that!
