Thread: Idea for a new droid module

I think 1K would be a beter distance.

Hologram module: I like this one a lot. What if, instead of just the message, (I'm not programmer, so not sure how this would be implemented), an image of the sender is projected out, like droids do in the movies? It would be an image of the person sending it, similar to the images of characters when you log on.

Bluto this is exactly what I was getting at, I realise I was a little vague there with the ins and outs on the funtionality of the module, but yes you hit the nail on the head there my friend.
Hmm maybe things could be too complicated to record an image of the droids user, due to the diverse and many character appearances, but they may be able to incorporate a standard hologram image, perhaps one for male characters and one for female.

( 3 ) Hologram module : lol a little adventurous but hey. Would enable you to record a message and remotely transmit it to another players droid. The would receive an ( Incoming hologram ) alert and would need to call the droid out to be able to view and retrieve the message. I know we have the in-game message system that is a lot quicker, but im talking fun here and nice little touches =)
To work around this, an Options filter would need to be in place with these options:
- Turn off Holo-Messengers
- AllowHolo-Messengers only from your friends list
- Disallow Holo-Messengers only from your ignore list
- Accept all Holo-Messengers
That should cover all the bases. Holo-Messengers sent to someone who has them turned of in respect to the sender simply receive them as an e-mail.
The programming aspects and database concerns are low-impact. The e-mail subsystem is already in place, and delivery would utilize the current e-mail subsystem. Only a few routines would need to be written to allow the message to appear as a Holo-Messenger as opposed to an e-mail, andthe bulk ofthe work is done client-side as a matter of display. Offline Holo-Messengers simply arrive at the recipient as a standard e-mail. This would allow Holo-Messengers to be sent to offline people as well, and not flood them with 100 Holo-Messengers (if they're a really popular person lol) the moment they log on. The graphics won't be that much work either as the basic framework for NPC's already exists, and just a modification to the textures would need to be applied (transparency etc).
If server latency is a concern, this could be hard-coded to be visible to only the person receiving the message. That way the client-side does 99% of the work in display, and the server doesn't have to send the data of the droid's / holograms existance to every person in view (which on a busy day in Coronet can be a couple hundred). The server just sends the data via the existing e-mail system which would only increase the datasize by a very small amount (1 parity bit for holo-message yes/no). The rest is done client-side.
So..... what does everyone think?
If this gets enough support in this thread, I'll likely move via copy/paste to it's own thread(including Sa-al's original idea) for a more public viewing.

Take a look at this slightly dusty thread.A Holographic module was brought up, along with a few different applications for it.
However, that doesn't brush on the idea of a disposable single-purpose droid that utilizes the e-mail sub-system as a means of more entertaining communication between players, as opposed to a standard module in die-hard droids. Unless I just didn't read far enough (read through that first long post then stopped).
But, there is another issue. I friend of mine is a Master Ranger and we worked on this one night together. They don't actually see 500m unless a player has already been there. As far as we can tell, spawns do not occur until there is a need, ie someone ventures within range. So in actuality a Ranger only sees 500m behind them, or 500m in front if they have a friend rideing 500m+ in front of them. The only thing that isn't effected is player tracking. They always appear if within 500m. So this leads me to beleave there is some kind of load placed on the servers such that they need to place these limitations. But I wasn't fortune enough to design/work on the system. So it's anyones guess.
From a personal point of view. Damn the Rangers, because I want that ability without haveing to devote any sp's
