OK, quick and dirty suggestion for a combat droid cert system:

When someone's using a PC, the effectiveness of web searches and such depends on the user, right? I mean, if you have someone who's used then net for 1 day and someone who's been using their PC (with the Google Toolbar, UI tweaked just right, etc) both doing a web search, who comes up with the searched for info first?

My point being that the owner of a piece of hardware does some tweaking and using as they go.

With that in mind, let's make the call that a combat droid (DZ, Probot) works in conjunction with it's owner, and fires it's weapon as if it were the most powerful weapon the owner is cert'd for. The rational is that the Probot is watching it's owner shoot, and since it's an AI, it learns from it's owner and becomes more accurate with the weapon it as goes, thus getting more damage via precision shots. The rationale would also include "off-camera" tweaking by the droid's owner of the weapon system (I mean, Luke worked on R2 to add the /light-saber-eject-and-eliver function, but didn't have DE, right?)

What's that give us?

1) A quick programming patch to the droid code for damage lookup, since all it needs to do is reference it's owner when called and load the damage table at that point.

2) Droids that "grow" with the owner, allowing a continuing NPC in the party and improving the immersion

3) Combat Droids that are useful inbattlefor the high-power types while not handing nuclear capability to the newbies.
