Thread: Publish 23: Easy house moving (ideal for BLL but it seems they missed that)
House Pack-up
- The owner of a player house may choose to "pack-up" the structure and all its contents into a house control device. This control device is stored in the player's data pad (CTRL-D). The option to pack up the house is available on the structure's control terminal. You can access the structure's control terminal by using the radial menu.
Once the house is packed up, a player can interact with the house in a limited fashion via the house control device in the data pad. The player has 3 options available:
- Check Status: This is identical to the check status available inside of the placed house. It allows a player to see the number of items stored in the house as well as the current maintenance situation on the house.
- Pay Maintenance: This is identical to the functionality of the same name on a placed house. It allows the player to make maintenance payments for the structure.
- Unpack house: This feature will cause the house to go into the placement mode. This works the same way as placing a house from a deed. All placement rules are followed.
** Note: Houses with vendors inside can not be packed. The vendors must first be removed before a house can be packed.
** Note: Only player houses may be packed up.
When a house is packed up:
- The waypoint to the packed up house is removed.
- If a player's city residency was declared with the packed up house, the residency is reset.
- If a player was a citizen of a city with the packed up house, that citizenship is revoked.

What i dont understand is why they dont make that function require a BLL - its perfect for the purpose and would give us DE a reason to make these huge babies.
Simple answer is this. Or so it would seem....
Because it would have taken a heck of lot longer to program, if it could be accomplished at all.
The idea has a lot of coolness factor behind it, however the actual ability to do something like this would have required a lot more additional programing time, not to mention an even longer amount of testing.
I can tell you that the feature, as is, took at least 6 weeks of testing and probably at least 8 weeks of combined coding and follow up coding from issues that were found from testing.
Imagine all of the additional coding and testing that would have to happen, in order to make sure that the BLL was required.
Here is an example of issues that would have needed to be examined -
- Call procedure to ensure that the BLL was found present in the datapad of the home owner
- Call procedure to ensure that the BLL owner and the home owner were the same
- Call procedure to ensure that the BLL did not give the user the ability to Pack up a house that they were only on the Admin list for.
- Test to ensure that the BLL owner was unable topack upa structure that wasn't 'theirs'
- Test to ensure that the BLL was present when the house menu option was supplied.
- Test to ensure that the menu would show, if the owner had a BLL.
As simple as those 6 examples look, I can tell you that a single mistake would result in the entire system not working correctly, and could allow anyone with a BLL to 'steal' another persons structure. Not to mention the fact that Datapad items are handle completely different then Inventory items, in the way that they offer 'triggers' to world data.

Hi
Makes sense and im aware that this stuff is sensitive since the risk of loosing 200 of a toons valueable belongingsis high.
I accept that the function is highly needed (heck - i moved myself a few times and beeing a crafter is a pain)
All in all i find this to be an option i would have loved to work with the BLL, but accept it could'nt be that way this time around.

I did make sure they saw the suggestion (a couple times)... Unfortunately it never went through.

If the calling of procedures stands as an argumentagainst implementing features, one must wonder how any feature ever gets implemented.
What a great forum name!
