What about the prepatch ones? I got a prepatch probe still from beginning of the game and it is almost as strong dmg wise as a new combat droid but has 3x the ham.

My DZ-70 has no combat modules and fights just fine (well, he fights - I'm not sure one point of damage every attack can really be classified as fine). I didn't think the R5 was combat capable?

Combat droids, DZ70 & Probot, have a inherent combatability though very limited. All other combat capable droids require a combat module to have any combat capability.

really you can craft probes with 3k ham again? the combat probe I bought was around 1k ham, the prepatch one I have is like 3100 ham.

You have a probot with 9k HAM? Mypub 8probot has 3184 HAM. You may have missed the combat changes between Pub 7 and Pub 8. However, once a droid is crafted, the modules themselves no longer exist. The droid instead is given capabilities according to the modules that were installed during the crafting stage. This means that pre-patch droids and combat modules are completely unrelated.
It is also my understanding that combat capable droids built without combat modules can still fight. They just do 1-1 points of damage.
