Heya, DEs...

The post below is a repost (here) of something I put up on the Corr. boards. Enjoy!

Respectfully,

Heya, everyone...

Okay...here it is, the huge compiled list of every droid module idea that I can find (primarily from the DE boards). Where I could, I made sure to note each of the basic module concepts only once...but there were many variants that I saw for specific line items. I also tried to categorize these as best I could but someone might want to re-order them so they make more sense or fit in the right place.

Some of these ideas have been brought up before but Iinclude all module ideas I was able to find (for the sake ofhaving a single'baseline'to work from, from this point on).

Ithink it would be good to use this post to separate the wheat from the chaff. Along those lines, it would be very good idea to build a list of "We can never make this" vs. "We can do this" modules.

The "We can't ever make this happen" list needs to be published to the forum (by a red-named official), so we can put some ideas to bed forever. Anything else that is doable can stay behind the curtain (for possible future addition). Doing so will help us to narrow our focus on modules that meet the criteria laid out below...

Thunderheart wrote:

We have two basic hurdles in identifying modules we can submit to the Dev Team:

  • Technical Difficulties: This virtual world is a platform and as such not everything you see in game works the way it appears to.

  • Balance Difficulties: Anything that gives "free skills" and "free abilities" will be looked at with a very scrutinous eye.

Beyond, that, there has to be a bazillion possibilties.

When you consider these ideas, I urge to weigh them with the following questions always in mind (when judging their practicality for development).

  • Do they add to gameplay?

  • Do they seem like 'real' Star Wars droid functions?

  • Do they preserve the existing separation of skillsets?

Okay...enough with banter...on to the list.

Note: Most of the line items are direct copy/paste from the thread. I assume in this post that these are basic, fundamental concepts...the details of which will be worked out after an idea is deemed worthy to focus on.

Enjoy!

Respectfully,

Business / Industrial:

Vending/Merchant:

  • Server module: droids could roam around cantinas and sell drinks to folks. This could be a mini style vendor, it would have to be emptied to store it again. But i think this would be great use for droids.

Harvest/survey:

  • Could augment survey ranges with right survey device installed and appropriate mods.

  • Resource Scanning Unit: Allows the droid to serve as any/certain type of surveying tool.

  • Gatherer Module: Allows the droid to "forage" autonomously for a limited time.

  • Resource Unit Sample Module: Could collect samples of all selected resources and deliver them to you.

  • Micro Production/Mini-Factory Module: Allows the droid to work as a mini-factory (at 50% the output speed?).

  • Increased storage capacity module (only for BLL Adv.).

  • DNA Storage Module: This module would help out Bio-Engineers with their problem of having to store allot of DNA. This DNA storage could only accept DNA and nothing else. The size of this storage compartment would be 25 to 50 DNA storage items. I dont think there would be a large database issue because of the DNA restriction and not everyone is a Bio-Engineer.

  • Construction Assistant Module: Allows the placement of buildings on rough terrain to an extent not yet possible. This was tweaked with the player city launch, so doesn't seem like a big development effort. There would be a limit of course, nothing completelyunrealistic like a house on the side of a mountain.

  • Camping assist module: Doesn't let you build camps, but allows a 'buff' to deploy the higher-level camps.

Repair:

  • Vehicle repair: Pretty much self-explanatory

  • Item Maintenance/Repair Module(s):Allows the droid to perform basic repairs on gear. Perhaps differentiated by repair type and "charged" at creation.

Communications:

Language / Translation:
(Note: There were MANY comments to do this.)

  • Language chip: Obviously one of my top choices, which will go along with my work to revamp the Language system. I consider this one of the top priorityand on my top 5 list. This would have LOTs of uses in my futureLanguage plans. I really would like to see some NPC's that speak languages only droids can translate also.

  • Act as messengers or answering machines when you are away or busy-- "oh im sorry, droidengineer2000 is out of the office, could i take a message?"

  • Communications Unit: Allows the owner to have the droid "Say" something (scripted text output).

  • Recorder/Stenographer Unit: Allows the droid to record up to 30 minutes of audio (say/emote) and spam (combat, system messages), or of a chat channel, then email the transcript to its owner, or even better as a datapad stored item that could be transfered to a data disk.

[Variant] HoloGraphic Communications/Recording Module: Many have suggested Holographic recording but, why not Real-Time Holographic communications. Perhaps this would run intoserver issues however just translating the a single characters physical attire is not that much information. One might even have to be in a Players Guild to get an uplink to the inter-system satelite network, which would limit number of users using it at one time thereby undermining server strain. (Heres great potential for Space content.)

  • Droid Publisher: Input a schematic, materials, and a string of text (must be able to acceptcolor and long text strings) The droid will add the text to crates of data disks. These diskscan be placed in buildings, traded among players, and used like newspapers, biographies, player guides, etc.

Item / Character manipulation:

Slicing:

  • A slicing module that allows for some choice in what slice you get (spd / dmg).

  • A slicing module that improves the chances of a slice working.

  • Smuggler compartment: While this droid is out, players get an increase dodge to contrabandscans. This component could be made in help with Smugglers.

  • Image Designer hologram module: Creates an exact hologram copy from the target and projects it. Offers also a UI to the customer so he canchange every aspect the ID can change. This then offers an easier to use system than the try and error we have now. When finished the ID gets a list of all the changes and can execute those one by one.

Faction / Combat-service:

  • Combat mechanic: Optimizes faction base turrets with some kind of bonus.

  • Proximity Alarm Unit: Make droids send a message to their owner when a faction enemy comes within a 100m.

  • Enemy Detection module: Would detect faction enemies, this could also be used to detecthostiles creatures/NPCs.

  • Smoke Screen/Cover module: A great thing for both PvE and PvP encounters. This is basically the same thing we saw R2 do in the movies. Jetting a smoke screen off which could be used for either stealthy attack or stealthy retreat.

  • Targeting Module: This provides an accuracy bonus for shooters, as the droid helps them determine where their gun will strike.

  • Shield Generator Module: Built in conjunction with Armorsmiths, perhaps. Can be placed in any droid type. Treats the droid as a portable shield generator, allowing it's protection to beassigned to two PC's within a short range. Players only, no pets or creatures can receivethis protection.

  • Ablative Armor Module:A one-use armor pack that will absorb a certain amount of damage before it is destroyed.Alternatively, one could mount an Armorsmith-crafted Shield Generator in the droid. (Ablative Armor could absorb any attack, while Shield Generators are only good against Energy attacks.)

  • Hunter/Killer Module:A limited-use module that greatly increases ranged weapon accuracy, effectiveness, and/or range.

Miscellaneous:

  • Autonavigation Unit (think "AutoPilot"): Would allow the player to give the droid 1..n waypoints and issuea "Goto" or "Patrol" command, allowing the droid to navigate across a planet remotely. [probably not possible]

  • Jukebox / sound control: MP3 type player and/or or in-game content audio soundtrackcontrol(Ent. droid somehow?)

  • ATM/Debit "Bank" module: Basically...make the droid a mobilebank terminal (no Safety Deposit access).

  • Gamble/gaming module: offers some minor games, every player agrees to join and once the game starts he automaticly receives the bet which goes either to the winner or disappears if something unforseen happens(droid incap, stored) to prevent cheating. Might take use of the dices. Protocol?

[Variant]: Allow player to play 1 on 1 'sabaac' (or other game) by posting their ownbets (with either credits or items).

  • Cloning module: Any player in droid range can use it to set/change his clone binding location. Either to the closest cloning facility from the droid location or to any available cloning facility on the planet (this could depend on the module level). Cloning should cost a bit more than in cloning facility ($2000 for instance).

  • Droid Terminal 'hack' sockets: Maybe every starport could have a socket that allows the droid to do the following:

    - Become a bazaar terminal
    - Become a mission terminal (of all types)
    - Become a bank terminal
    - Maybe certain quest missions would require you to havea droid with a data module and the droid has to "hack" something to get you onto the next step.

  • Waypoint storage (note: You didn't think I wasn't gonna post this, did ya?!? - TheRealTK421): I have wayyyyyyy too many waypoints id love to store. Maybe it couldbe done client side to save DB space. A simple text file would be great too.

Drashk's post - Compiled Droid Module Ideas

Entertainment module:

Similar in function to the Medical module, the Entertainment module give an Entertainer the ability to use his/her skills else where besides in a Cantina, house, or tent. Non-functioning in the Med Center, the Entertainment module follows the same level progression as the Medical Module with a maximum rating of 110%.

Slicing Module:

This module would assist a Smuggler when ever slicing weapons or armor, by granting the user a percentage based chance to picking the outcome of the slice. This module could be level based and follow the standard level module progression. At level 1, the module could grant a Smuggler a 0 -10% chance of successfully choosing the out come of any slice made on weapons and armor. The percentage at each level is based on the quality of the module produced. A Level 6 Slicing module would allow for a 0 - 60% of success at choosing the outcome of a slice.

Scouting Module:

The Scouting Module would give Scouts information on an organic resource, without actually harvesting the resource. The Scout could target a creature and order their droid to scan it. The player would then be able to examine the creature an find out what type of resource could be harvested, what the stats are on the resource, and how long the resource has been present. This module would also benefit Bio-Engineers, by giving the BE information about the DNA that can be

harvested from each creature. This would need a balancing mechanism such as a time limit between each command.

Sampling Module:

The Sampling Module would allow a PC the ability to ascertain the stats of any given resource in their direct vicinity. The Sampling module would list the stats of a chosen resource and the length of time that it has been present. It would not give the density of the resource, nor would it list resources that are not located in the spot that command was given. This would need a balancing mechanism such as a time limit between each command.

Personality Chips:

Not a new module, but a revamp of the existing droid Personality chips. Droids with personality chips installed could give you information about different POIs, depending on what personality chips is installed. For instance, a droid with the Prissy personality chip could offer historical information about a POI, but only when it is near the POI. This information could be a spatial text, or the idea that I like, it could create a next document that is stored in your datapad and can be traded, or stored in a droids data storage module.

The document could offer Extended Universe information about the POI. The Slang personality could offer underworld information about the POI, the Worshipful personality could offer regional information that could relate to ruling bodies, the Stupid personality could offer rumors, and the Geeky personality could offer DEV notes on the actual design of the POI. This would give the personality chips a purpose and at the same time add content to the game in the form of EU information.

Merchant Module:

The Merchant module would allow a Novice Merchant set a droid on patrol in a city and sell a limited number of wares, based on something like the Item storage module, and leave it to its own accord. Anyone would then have the ability to open the droids radial and discover a Browse Vendor option that would allow you to see what items the droid has

for sale. Balancing issues could include power costs, or a droid maintenance fee.

GCW Spy Personality Chip:

Available to only a factioned DE through a recruiter, the Spy Personality chip could be installed into a Converse style droid and sold to someone of the opposite faction. When ever the droid is called out, a chat channel opens for the DE that crafted the droid and spatial text is displayed for the DE to read. A MDE of the opposite faction can detect the spy chip by simply /examining the droid and then is given the option to remove the chip, without harm to the droid. The chip could be added to any existing personality chip schematic.

GCW Anti-Detection module:

Available to only a factioned DE through a recruiter, the Anti-Detection module would allow for someone and their droid to appear as a neutral on radar, while declared. Direct line of sight, or targeting, would reveal the PC and droid to be declared faction members.

  • Vehicle repair: Pretty much self-explanatory

Hey, it's not self-explanatory. They won't go for that unless the 'money sink' remains in (and they fix the vehicle repair for free bug). (/jediwave Link my Pit Droid thread)

Nice list though.

No doubt. I wanted to build a 'one-stop-shopping' list of droid module ideas to have an baseline.

Hopefully, this will be the singular list from which they will cull future droid module ideas. If something seems to 'fit' (in relation to the gameplan I put forth), then we'll have a basis to move forward and discuss/propose further.

Clip from TK's post: "Autonavigation Unit (think "AutoPilot"): Would allow the player to give the droid 1..n waypoints and issue a "Goto" or "Patrol" command, allowing the droid to navigate across a planet remotely. [probably not possible]"

If they can do this, then I'd want them to go the next step where my R series droid has a an optional module in it the lets it ride in the shotgun seat of my landspeeder and pilot me and my landspeeder to a waypoint or series of waypoints while I take a bio break or get a soda. And I'd expect it to not be stupid and have some obstical avoidance. In otherwords, go around unpassable terran features and not drive through the aggro ranges of MOB's. Obviously this wont work on the faster swoop or speeder bike. After all, where would the droid fit.

I'd also expect this to work with spacecraft with the space expansion comes out. To be honest, my idea of space/vehicle travel can be summed by the scene in EP2 where Count Dukual was flown back to the capital after he escaped the battle. A droid did the piloting and navigation.

Maybe have Landspeeder's have an optional slot of a Droid Storage Compartment?

I assume that the absolute #1 most-requested artisan/crafter droid module, Harvester Maintenance, has been omitted because TH previously said it was technically infeasible.

I would recommend adding it back in. TH has not proven to be a reliable source of information on what is possible, impossible, or probable. The devs should not stop seeing this request based on TH's limited ability to predict what will happen.

More than any other single feature, artisans have repeatedly requested a droid capability to check harvester maintenance & power and retrieve hopper contents. If this is technically impossible (not difficult), then we need to hear this from somebody who writes code or manages the people who writes code .... because the nearly useless fluff we are offered as "functionality" on droids today is not a substitute for something actually useful and interesting.
