Thread: Slicing and droids and smugglers
Hello all, Im new to DE, I am a rifleman and decided to take up Droid Engineering also.
I was crafting my million MSE droids lol to gain some xp when I started to think... Why don't Smugglers need Droids to slice?
Think about it, Did you ever see Hahn Solo slicing a terminal? No, he had R2-D2 to do that. So why not make it that in order for a smuggler to slice a terminal or weapon and such, he has to have a Droid with a Slicing Module built into the droid. This would make more players need Droids.
Your thoughts?
I thought about that also after I made the post. It should give them an added bonus for using a droid to aid in slicing.
Doesnt really matter how the droid gets it's slicing "powers", just needs to be able to help the smuggler.

There's been alot of begging - er, thoughts on the Smuggler message boards asking developers to impliment some form of droid-vendor ability to allow smugglers to sell spices where ever they travel. I don't have anything specific to quote, but I've read questions about adding additional modules which duplicate other profession's special abilities... However all of them have been from players, so it doesn't look like there's really anything in the works... Yet.
Actually he did in Return of the Jedi heh... If you remember he managed to close another set of doors on the bunker on Endor... So you have a valid point =).
Personally i can't see a smuggler improving a weapon made by a master weaponsmith, nor can i see a smuggler improving a set of armour made by a master armourcrafter, after all they are the masters not the smuggler! Most of the hackers i know have very specailized tools for their work, they don't just march up to a atm and pull out cash they have tools they use. Also if they can improve armour and weapons why not slice droids for better droids?

Slicing is rather like a computer enthusiast overclocking his CPU. It may work. It may not work. It may completely destroy the CPU. This kind of thing is possible because CPUs are created in bulk and only tested at specific frequencies. They are not tested to see just how high they can go as long as they pass at the correct official clockspeed. So it makes sense that anything produced in a factory should be slicable. Hand-made items, though, should not be.

OH yeah, forgot to mention. The "laser-tool" is what's used up when a smuggler slices a terminal.
When you first attempt, you geta message that says "You remove the back panel to display the protection mechanism" (I've seen this countless thousands of times, yet I've only read it twice and didn't care to memorize what's said)...
You get the option to cut the red or blue wire (negative / positive). COMPLETELY random 50/50 chance for success. If you fail, you get nothing! And the item can no longer be sliced. Ever, by anyone.
If you succeed, that uses a charge off the laserknife, then you just need to cut the next wire... and PRESTO!
To aid the smuggler, they can use Flow Analyzer Nodes which are suppose to add a +75% success. - Again, if this fails, it's un-sliceable thereafter.
Molecular Clamps can be used for a 100% success at slicing (requires 90 metal each).
SUCCESS = random improvement%, usually between 17 and 30%.
SUCCESS = random modifier: armor - encumberance (20% average), resistances (80% average); Weapons - damage 25% average, speed 75% average.
Lastly - remember - Any locked door can be unlocked by shooting it with a blaster.

I am also a Smuggler / Droid Engineer. The most annoying thing to a Novice Smuggler is failing on a locked container. They arn't extremely common and you definitly need to get through I think 20 of them. A droid that would have helped me get through containers easier would have been great!
Here's my thought: a droid slicing module would act like a flow analyzer ....but it would only work for Containers and Terminals since Smugglers don't get any tools until after Terminals.
This slicing module would be granted at Intermediate Droid Construction allong with the Weapon/Droid/Generic crafting station.
