Thread: Perceptions of a new DE.

I realize that rants are common in these forums, especially regarding the condition of the profession, but I have a resounding point to make to SOE where it hurts the most: the wallet. There a lot of new players who see "Droid Engineer" and think "Cool!" and start working their way towards it. Then, they've dedicated a few months of their free time and their money crafting through DE, only to find the most pathetic profession in the game. Where does that leave them? Irritated, tired of crafting useless hunks of metal, and ready to find another game. I'm not to that point yet: I'm willing to hold out with DE for a little longer or at worst surrender it for another profession, but most people don't have my patience and will find another game. If you care, here's my experience with DE...

I haven't posted in these forums much, but I have been lurking about silently, following the plight of the Droid Engineer profession since I started playing SWG (Dec. 2003).

I hadn't thought much about what kind of character I intended to build, but I began to consider becoming a dedicated DE when my first Jedi Holocron, given out in December asa "Christmas present," instructed me to master this profession. After all, who doesn't find the ability to construct those technological marvels, infinite in their capability as companions on arduous treks, aides in medicine, tools in constructionor allies on the battlefield, strongly compelling? That was imagination's impression, at least. As I began grinding my way to Master DE, excited to build the best droids as soon as possible, I began to wonder why I didn't see more droids in cities and in the field...

It didn't take long to discover the limited use of droids in SWG. I was simply appalled that tried-and-true DE's had been living with this... monstrosity... of a gameplay contraption since the game's release. Although I know you are all painfully aware of this, comparing DE to the other crafting professions is astonishing. EVERY other crafter has a product that people not only want, but they essentiallyrequire.

Tailors =Everyone wears clothing and wants to look impressive.
Architects = Required by crafting professions, cities, guilds, or general players in need of houses or other structures.

Weapon smiths = Required by combat professions.

Armorsmiths = Almost every member of a combat profession possess armor of some type.

Chefs = After the revamp, the Chef profession is extremely useful (especially brandy for the wealthier combatants).

Bio-engineers = Both Creature Handlers and Chefs require BE-crafted goods.

Artisan = Yes, even the basic Artisan has goods that the community requires, especially vehicles and goods needed by the elite crafting professions.

Droid engineers, however, have it the worst of any craftingprofession in the game. This profession has the potential, as I indicated above, to be the most exciting, fascinating crafting profession. Droids can/could do just about anything, especially alleviate the more monotonous aspects of the game (increase surveying range, repair weapons, etc.)

But, no. Droid Engineers have some of the most complicated assemblies in the crafting world, require more specific resources, and dedicate some of the most time to the creation of their products than the rest. Yet, despite all of the trouble required to put out an MDE droid, they end up being some of the most useless products in the game. The irony is both laughable and sickening at once.

Indeed, the only thing more "Starwarsy" about Star Wars than droids are the Jedi and the Rebellion. Yet, in SWG, Entertainers and Image Designers, of all things, are more common than Droid Engineers!

Now, alright, it's a broken profession. I can accept that the profession was approached inappropriately or that there was simply more time dedicated to the other professions. Such is the challenge of developing a game with the scope and depth of SWG. I applaud the Developers for their amazing efforts in this area. But the fact that the Chef profession recieved a complete overhaul to create a truly useful and enjoyable profession, while the DEs are left with vague, inadequate responses to their clarion-calls for change in the most compelling profession in the game leaves me dumbfounded. If it's broken, fix it. Just like they did for Chef.

Well, I'm sure you've all heard this before. I just needed to vent some steam, especially after hearing that no CL10+ droids will be available until after the Space Expansion. I will wait patiently, as DEs seem apt to do, and focus on Rifleman or whatever else comes my way until the Space Expansion. I'm afraid, though, that many will give up DE for Piloting or Shipwright professions when the expansion comes, leaving Droid Engineering a dead profession. It's already gasping for air.

I can only hope that Publish 8 achieves the same effect as the Chef revamp. I guess we won't know until more details are revealed...

I don't think it will, but it will be some steps forward (and perhaps a few back, as it seems bugs are inevitible, and some new things work out better or worse than others).

I, in some way, think that DE, as hugely Star Warsy as it IS, esp compared to Chef (no insults to chefs, I like you guys n' gals, but movie-wise we saw more droids on-screen than Chefs (wasn't Dex, Obi'wan's friend that identified the Kaminoan dart, a chef? So one HAS been seen on the big screen!). I'm thinking because droids are such a HUGE part of the Star Wars universe, that I'd rather have them take longer and get it right (which, admittedly, most or all DE feel hasn't happened yet). And yes, it has been 8 months or so since launch, but I think in alot of ways Chef probably would have been easier for them to re-vamp than DE, anyway. They had to pick SOMEWHERE to start.

Now, I do hope to see more bug-fixes get fixed on a more regular basis, as seemed to used to be the case last summer into fall, than it seems happens now, but as someone else said baby steps forward are at least progress forward.

Myself, I'm excited for all the possibilities the Space Expansion might bring (I'm not counting on much in the way of new utility or uses for droids or droid components to actually BE in the SE, but), as I can think of quite a few ways droids could have added utility in a SWG universe that includes space and spaceflight. Course, we can all think of ways (and so many have) of ways droids could have added utility in the current ground-based SWG universe. I guess I just have a bit of optimism that devs somehow collect the good ideas, even if they haven't posted much in our forums.

But, that's a ways off, as is most probably any implementation of any huge or ground-breaking or grand additions or changes to the DE profession. But I hope I can think up some thoughtful and detailed ideas, and contribute to the DE community, and I apologize if my optimism offends anyone.

Well, the most obvious Space Expansion use for droids is astromech droids... (makes me wonder why R2-5s are even in the game since their primary purpose hasn't been added yet... though who wants to make droids without R2? :smileyvery-happy

In any case, you're probably right. It is better for them to take longer to develop a superior result, even if it takes a year (although its sad to see disillusioned veteran DEs dropping the profession).

Optimism is never wrong... Sometimes it can be a false hope, though.

With the way the developers dislike any profession needing a product we make, and the general way the developers disregard anything that has to do with star wars (creatures over pets... etc) I wouldnt put too much faith in the developers to even require a droid to be needed for fighters... or anything dealing with the space expansion!

Lets face the music... these guys would be very happy if we all disappeared and they could tend to the professions they feel are important to the game
