Thread: Idea for re-working combat modules

Firstly, droids don't do enough damage. Plain and simple.

Secondly, they should be able to do varying types of damage, after all, players can, too.

After playing KoTOR II at my friend's house and seeing the various weapons you could acquire for your droid, I thought, "Hell, why can't we have this in SWG??"

So--Here are two proposals:

1. Player-Made Weaponry

What I mean by this is Weaponsmith crafted guns. Like a CDEF Pistol/Rifle/Carbine. Or something better. This way, you could put a gun, or parts of a gun, into your droid to determine the combat damage/speed and maye SAC, too, as droids have "Action" and "Mind," too.

I may add more to this idea later, and probably will post it in the WS forums.

2. Varying Types of Combat Modules/Sub-Modules for Combat Modules

Sub-Modules for Combat Modules:

For this idea, combat modules would require the same amount of resources, but have sockets for smaller sub-combat modules. The"socketed" combat module would have, say, 3 sockets. An example would be this: Melee Shock Arm (taken from KotOR(electricity), Medium Range Blaster (Something like a carbine; carbine's range), Droid Flame Turret (mini-flamethrower, DUH! ).

Ranged sub-combat-module-component-things would/could be as such:

Melee:

Melee Shock Arm: Electrical damage, partical effect like that of Force Lightning, 6 meter range.

Melee Torch Arm: Base of kinetic damage, Heat elemental damage, as well.

(possibly more to come, need feedback)

Ranged:

Close Range Blaster: a. Energy blaster, like a pistol with psitol range.

b. Base Energy damage, elemental aswell. (like cold damage pistols)

Medium Range Blaster: a. Energy blaster, like a carbine with carbine range.

b. Same as pistols, carbine range.

Long Range Blaster: This one, admittedly, probably shouldn't be as long range as a rifle, maybe 50 meters. Otherwise, same as previous two.

Grenades: Grenade launching mechanism for Commandos. Yep. End of story until Commandos are fixed.

I welcome any positive feedback/constructive criticism, and depending on how many replies/ideas this gets, I'll edit in your ideas (with credits, of course).

Thanks for your time,

-Lotus-/Aivo

I would love to see more variety in our Combat Droids as well.

I very much like the idea of different types of combat modules, based off items or at least subcomponents crafted by weaponsmiths. Heck, we need battle segments from an AS, why not something from a WS?

Then there's the age-old question of balance, which has been hashed and re-hashed out here in the forums a lot recently. Since a droid is technically a pet, it has to be balanced like one. If a droid is going to do more damage than it is right now (past 284), there has to be a trade-off of some sort, like less health or less armor. Or a higher CL. But regardless, I like the idea of different *types* of damage...something other than kinetic.

On another note, it'd be neat to see "specials" modules, where the droid can be fitted with "knockdown" or "blind" equivalent functions.

I am in agreeance with Sur-Jamkar on this one. Look at smugglers now they had all there tools replaced with loot components that are not stackable, crafters in general have a hard time with inventory can you imagine if we had to stock non stackable loot components just to be competitive.

Like I posted above if we were to get the ability to put additional component into an item to boost a stat in it, I would like the component to be an item that we could build ourselves rather than loot. Here is an expanded list of module subcomponents:

  1. Combat module

    • Combat recital = increases accuracy in droid

    • Power regulator = reduces damage but increases ROF

    • Overcharge = increases damage butreduces ROF

    • Enhanced barrel = adds elemental damage bonus

  2. Motive System

    • High speed actuators = increases droid speed

  3. Sensors

    • Radar dish =grants a limited ranger search abilityand increased tracking to rangers

    • Covert scanner = like a covert scanner but mobile and shorter range (must remain stationary, usable only when SF)

These are just a few ideas I can expand it later if anyone wants me to.

I like that idea/ideas very much, and theoretically my idea and yours could be combined, although we'd run the risk of making droid even more complicated than they already are. BUT, this would allow for a very customizable droid, I must say.
