Are there any type of droids that can be made that will seek out specific resources?

No.
What we have a Planetary Survey Droids. You pick a planet and type resource to survey, (mineral, chemical, gas, etc...) and it goes and surveys what is on that planet, you getan email, and lets you know what is on that planet.
