What if we could place a module into say a C3PO droid that let us use them as NPC's that people could converse with. Sort of like a personal herald.

And example would be a Mayor placing a Droid in or around the Town hall. When a visiting player clicked "converse" on it the droid would greet them and offer several questions.

These questions could be.. "Tell me about this city" or "Where can I find good blasters here?" or even "I wish to join your city.. who can I contact to gain membership?" Or anything similar the droid owner types in.

Another use could be to shop owners who can place down an assistant droid who can act as a FAQ.

I.e. "What items do you specialise in?" or "What vendor offers will you accept?"

That's actually already come up way back and never really went anywhere.

Instead of broadcasting, you can have the droid /tell Soandso with the programmed message when the droid is double clicked. And inappropriate messages is not a problem from a user standpoint, it is from the dev standpoint with their use of filters. Anyone can stand around talking profanities, but droids that talk to you becausea specific reason (like being double-clicked) is totally different and should be allowed to be programmed.

I seem to recall one of the devs saying that programmable conversations are not possible due to technical limitations (right now, new conversation scripts require use of a dev "conversation editor" program, and then a publish).

Though I'd be happy with droid barking -- like vendors. It's not perfect, but it'dbe a good step towards what we need.

So, is that possible atm or just standing on any ToDo list?

This has been suggested at many points in the past.

I think the issue has been that it would be too hard to control/oversee what people are putting in. The issue is obviously related to inappropriate text entries that could be placed into the text entry.

I suppose there might be some way to address down the line but I think that true, user-provided text is likely not ever going to happen, unfortunately.

It's a super-cool idea but I just don't know a way that they can do it and ensure that the sophmoric people out there would misuse it to post horribly inappropriate and 'griefable' content.

It would be cool if you could program certain droids to bark in cities. I know this was taken out of the merchant tree but it would be nice if you could put a droid in a city to say something like: "Holocron for sale. Please send a tell to X!"

However there could be a serious spam issue with this too. Perhaps this is why NPC ad barking was taken out.

There is also the issue of message spam. You can /addignore a PC, but can you /addignore a PCs droid?
