Thread: What DE was suppose to be, my ancient vision of a great profession

When I first heard about this game I was playing Earth & Beyond (my first MMO). It was great... for awhile. Then I got more interested in Star Wars Galaxies. I slowly left E&B to be part of this great game. I joined this community on January 2003. At first, this game was overwhelming. I couldn't go on my computer without having a window open on my desktop dedicated to the SWG forums.

Then I saw the magnificient profession that was Droid Engineer. It was suppose to be based on 3 droid categories:

- Labor ( help build things, work with people to make labor easier, etc.)

- Servant (serve drinks food to people, heal them, etc.)

- Combat (well... kill stuff heh)

Imagine the possibilities! Imagine the immersion! Imagine living Star Wars on your PC for real! Not an FPS, not a strategie game but a game where you can do what you want in this great world!

Then, the big changes came. My vision was shattered. Dreams of having combat droids and defending me while I escape near death from a thief are drowned to nothing. Still I hoped.

I got accepetd in Beta 3. Joy! I would help to test this great game! I worked hard to find bugs and I submitted at least 1 bug/day even though it wasn't game breaking. I enjoyed my month in beta and even though I knew this game had alot of bugs, I purchased it anyways because I knew they would be squashed in a matter of weeks.

Then the time came for me to grind. I know this may not be a great method, but I went up the Artisan tree twice. I had seen it and wanted to discover what my beloved profession had become. After thedreaded hours of grind I had to endure to become a Novice DE, my dream had come true! After this, my dream demolished. My work had been in vain. I had lost hope for this once great and valored profession. Broken, bugged and totally useless...

I have sold all my DE skills and my Artisan skills. Why you might ask? Simply put, because. I was tired of having to run to my harvesters to maintain them. I was tired of answering question after question on how to program the droid. I was tired of it all...

What I had envisionned for this profession had been mutated to what we have now. They started with a great idea, did half the work that was needed and we ended with this disaster. It is clearly stated in the Holocron under the Droids tab that droids are a very important part of Star Wars. I can only look at this and laugh right now because no one actually needs a droid. The usefullness of these once great machines had been reduced to nothingness.

I agree, alot of professions need work but none surpases Droid Engineers in my eyes. Thank you for reading this. I hope you guys agree with what I have stated. Please leave comments.

I feel your pain, but I hold hope for the near future. There is no doubt that there are a lot of profession issues. It seems most professions have issues. The Devs are working on it, and it seems that since we have been mostly ignored lately, we should be getting some loving soon. I have a small hope that with the vehicles expansion that we will be the ones to build and repair them. We work with machinery, after all. So I keep plugging along, using this dead-time to grind up so when the dawn breaks, I'll be ready. There's always more missions to run, combat skills to play with, and houses to build.

Jedi will never be a starting profession...Looted items and quest items will never be better then crafted items, this is not a loot based game...CH will return shortly...CH and BE will not be back in game...Rangers are getting their revamp next!...The stealth system will not be changing in the spy expertise...Need any more examples of things the devs said that did not hold true?

Still holding onto hope.

When you said no-one "needs" a droid... it got me thinking... What if they got rid of public crafting stations?

???

Better buy that droid if you want to craft in town...

OMG, that sounds like a GREAT idea!!! Imagine! Getting rid of the public crafting stations would revamp the DE buisness!!! Maybe make them so newbies can use them but after awhile, they become useless. Wow, great idea, keep em coming!

You do not need to get rid of them just reduce the complexity they can allow you to craft!! and it would only help our B if the darn modules work!! the structer mod still wont stack with anything!!

You dont have to explain how to program droids. All programming and pet related stuff is on page 141 of the game manual everyone has.

The crafting stations in the citys are allready standard ones.. If u want to make the more advanced items you need to have a advanced crafting station in your house or buy a droid from a DE with a crafting station.. All the stations that we put in to the droids are ADV stations.. So your idea is allready partially implemented

Yes, just let a master have enough experiment points to make the droid stations as good as the architect stations. It won't destroy the market for the architects, and besides, they make houses too .

They could do several things -- all quite simple:

1) Get rid of public crafting stations.

2) Make private crafting stations more expensive to build that droids

3) Reduce Critical failures when droids are used as crafting stations.

4) Allow medical droids to improve the skills of a medic.

5) Make a combat droid at least as powerful as the most powerful pet, (so people will use them and not keep them locked in their data pads, and so people will buy them, along with the removal of permadeath for the droid, or the addition of permadeath for creatures).

A more difficult task, (but one well worth it, in my opinion), would be to teach a droid to maintain harvesters and retrieve resources from them.

Those are all great ideas/comments. Would be nice if Sintrosi would take a peek here and give us some feedback on the ideas. Maybe even forward them to the devs?
