Thread: Software Engineer NOT droid handler
Software Engineer - NOT an elite class but one that can suppliment the Droid Engineer
Any class in the SWG Universe can use a droid - its pretty easy, you buy it, someone tells you the command list or you program it to understand your commands and then you issue commands. Anyone can use a droid, its just a matter of giving it a preprogrammed command. If it breaks or you want it to do something else, it takes the DE or SE to change it.
Enter the Software Engineer - he takes the blah standard Probot from the Droid Engineer and/or Droid Brain and/or other components and begins to work his/her magic by programming the routines needed to utilize new special functions. The droids can be set apart from one another by having special logic and/or functions added that make it more useful, better attacks, better recon, better all around, etc.
Now to really spice it up - allow the Droid Engineer to get components from other crafters and use them in the assembly of the droid ( armor, weapons, stims from docs, crafting stations ) The DE should only be able to craft basic simple versions of these, the Uber ones have to come from the Masters respectfully.
A medical droid that can actually heal, the DE buys the stims, the Software Engineer programs the routines for disbursement and the community at large is in love with them. Docs sell stims as reloads in the droids just like batteries.
New attack types for combat droids - a probot that has a DX-2 component added as the weapon so it does Acid now instead of energy or a FWG5 added so it does Heat....or lets go all out and put in a Lightning canon for Electricity....hehe....now mind you the components added are useless unless a Software Engineer can program the code to activate it........
A good use for the power droid, Sotware engineer can customize the patrol points to check for a harvester that has he same master/owner as itself to see if it can deposit power or maint.
A good use for the BLL, see above, same thing applies if the Software engineer programs it.
Don't make certs for droids, you don't have to get a cert to use the computer you have in front of you now nor did you have to get a cert to add that printer or hard drive and no one is going to make you get a cert if you are going to add ram....but...if you want your computer to reach out to your ReplayTV box, download the latest recorded episode of Stargate SG-1, burn it to a DVD+RW and then remove it from the ReplayTV all so you can have an archive of the show...you better get a Software engineer to do that because it doesn't come standard.

Interesting idea. I don't think it should be a new profession, but I'm actually working on a proposal for a droid programming language that I'll post in a few days.
