I bought a 3po droid earlier tonight. He is utterly useless but all i need him for is to name him! He has a stupid chip in him so i dont know if thats causing my problem or not. I just want to know how to name him, if anyone could help me out i would forever be in your debt.

Oh, if it is the stupid chip, can i upgrade him? He ought to be able to learn his name without a stupid chip, hell a mouse droid can!

You cannot currently name any droid that you converse with. This includes LE Repair droids, Surgical droids, and Protocol droids.

To name the droid and have it stand in your shop (and even animate) have a droid engineer just make a protocol droid ADV frame, not the full droid. Then he can name it in the final combine step and just give the frame to you.

DEs, explain to me why this wouldn't work to name a protocol droid you converse with. I know once the thing's BUILT that you can't train/program in a name, but if you name the frame, then finish building it, wouldn't that work? Or am I missing something? In other words, you can name the frame in construction, but after it's built, it's stuck with that name (even if it's "a Protocol Droid") ?

Regardless of what "name" you give a component, it is still just a component to the finished Droid. It doesn't carry through to actually affect the final item. If I named my Advanced Brains "Henry" my R3's would still be plain old R3 Droid when they come out.

Example: I'm a chef and I make some recipe. When it's finished, it says "name your product." The default is "Exo-Protein Wafers," but I can change it to "Double-Ended Lightsaber +4 to Vader" if I want. Is it not the same with droids, i.e. once you're completely done with the droid, it'll say "name your product," and the default is "a protocol droid?" I don't understand the progression, how it differs from other crafting.

Because what we ACTUALLY create at the final step is NOT the droid, but a 'deed' for the droid. We can name that deed whatever we like, but when the droid is tamed it becomes 'A Protocol Droid' or whatever.

Taking a well-deserved vacation from his successful Droid Engineering business, Master Rho can be found puttering around the galaxy.
