Thread: Droid Tactician... possibly a new idea?

Well, I was thinking. Since Politician is a "Basic" profession, but is not available to brand new characters, couldn't a Droid Tactician be set up similarly? This would allow a lot of different characters to be DT, but wouldn't demand too much skill points. Sure, Creature Handlers are undercut here, but if they actually allow CH pets to not suck and keep your droids from being terribly Ub3r, I think this would work out quite well. It's kind of balanced out because basic profession mastery takes 77 Skill Points as opposed to advanced classes taking 63. The Droid Tactician should be a dependant profession, and not stand-alone, similarly to how CH is now. CHs need to be grouped, or double some other combat class to use pets effectively.

Example requirementson getting Novice DT. 15 skill points and250 apprentice xp. Apprentice xp is kind of hard to come by, yet 250 is a low enough amount that most people could get DT the second or third week of playing at the most.

As for having DE/DT as the same class, there's a lot of stuff wrong with this idea. First, it'd be like having all combat classes doubling as a weaponsmith. That wouldn't go over very well. Secondly, your market base would remain the same. You aren't really gaining anything here other than the ability to use higher level droids, which doesn't make sense. It'd be like having BE and CH merged.

The only other possibilities I can think of are to have DT as a separate profession with the same requirements as squad leader. It makes sense because directing People ordirecting Droids should take the same skills.

OR

Have CHs function as DT as well. This wouldn't go over with most CHs since they like their pets and despise droids. It makes sense, because droids function as pets, but makes no sense in any other way. Scouting has nothing to do with droids.

Note- This may have been proposed before, but I'm lazy, and didn't feel like checking.

Yes, this has been suggested before....except under different names; Droid Handler,Droid Commander ...etc. The idea has been shot down from many angles.

I've double checked the numbers. Becoming Master Droid Tactician if it were a Basic Profession would cost 77 skill points. This is in comparison to a Master Creature Handler which costs 106 skill points due to the need for the two scouting skill trees. Still, I think it would work since a Creature Handler isn't dependant on Bio-Engineers for pets (they can just get better ones from them) but Droid Tacticians are completely dependant on Droid Engineers. This makes Droid Tacticians similar tomany of the other basicprofessions because combat professions need to buy armor and weapons from appropriate artisans.

It has been shot down as a "stand alone" profession. There was a comment by Runesaber about this about a month ago.

It's not really stand alone, though. Sure, you don't need any previous skills to BE a Droid Tactician in my setup, but it'd not available at character creation (just like Politician). Newblers wouldn't be able to be DT in my system, and although there are less skill requirements than CH, droids must be purchased from Droid Engineers.

Now that I'm thinking about it, though, It would be hard tothink of anyskills that would go under this system. CH's learn commands, but Droid Engineers alreadyprogram into the droids all of their commands. I'll have to think about this one...
