all people can command a pre programed droid its no problem. not every person can (excuse the spelling) mentain it. so the higher the lvl the higher the mentainens.

so let them buy droid dekars and see them fall apart its just more businees for the DE

so the DEV's need to implement a mentaines that reflect the droids lvl .....

They want droid use to be certed by skill not by creds, otherwise a rich friend could set a n00bie up with a top notch droid and mow stuff over (not what they want )

Personaly I think the best option for combat droids are TOP of the Line (most likely droidekas) at any MASTER Elite skill tree, Roger roger types at any Novice Elite skill tree or Mastering any starting profession.. with maybe something a little for BH's since they use the most skillpoints to master any single profession(can we say assissin droid fits well imo) And say probot use for everybody like current.

This way its gated in a simple easy to explain way, that keeps the top of the line out of the noobies hands while giving a useful droid to people of thier skill level

The question that occurs... will DEs get all the certs for the droids? Or will we build them but not be able to use them (or use them extremely poorly)?

They need to stay away from putting controlcerts in specific branches, otherwise we'll have a repeat of the CH trouble.

If they really want to keep true to the CH nerf, they need to make it a CL control system, with each box contributing a certain # of levels. Otherwise you'd have dabblers with 4/4/0/0 DE to control the strongest combat droids, and they would just buy them, much like you have people going 3/2/0/0 to control GM's

I don't have a strong opinion on this, but...

As a Master Artisan / Master DE / Master Merchant / Architect, I am not more battle-worthy than a starting character. Take away my probot and kaadu(which any starting character *could* be given), and I'm basically defenseless.

I'm not sure how being able to give powerful droids or critters to newbies really changes the game at all. Okay, so after patches I, as a DE, may be able to use better combat droids... What about someone else who plays an Artisan/Tailor/Architect/Merchant? They are not combat-ready and their wads of cash can't change that for them.

I think there should be avenues, besides skill points, for any character concept to obtain decent personal defense. For the fighting classes, that security is their own training and weaponry. For CH and (someday) DE, that security is the pets they command. But somewhere, somehow, there should be a way for the big-money crafters (besides DEs)to get that same security if they're willing to shell out the bucks. Why not be with droids they have to purchase?

With a purchasable and perishable item like a droid, experienced non-combatants with lots of money have a way to survive the wilds.

If this leaves an avenue for new characters to survive a little easier with help from experienced friends, who cares? It will happen no matter how the rules change. Still a newbie given 10,000 credtis, a probot, and level-10 pet by a friend is at an advantage over the one who does it all alone. If they are trying for a combat class, the combat pet/droid will suck away their XP and slow their progress. If they are not trying for a combat class then these things don't provide much advantage.

I've heard it said that powerful pets will allow newbies to completemissions faster and thus earn money faster. But really: If someone just handed them a high-end droid or pet for free, couldn't that person just as easily hand them wads of cash?

I don't know what the real solution is. I would like to see rich artisans have a way to survive harvester runs, contribute to hunts, and participate in the Galactic Civil War if they want to. If purchasing and commanding combat droids provides that way, I think it's better than nothing. Giving this power only to DEs makes us the new CH "fad" class for twinks, which I really don't want to see.

So, let me get this straight: To advance my character, I have to give up my current abilities?

Ideas has a point, Craftsmen need defense. Puting certs only for Mastery in combat classes makes does nothing for crafters. However, Coronet Starport filled with Droideka rolling around isn't any more Star-Warsy than the Zoo it is now. The Trade Federation controlled most Combat Droids in SW, so it's feasble that anyone with money could have them.

I personaly think that anyone should be able to use any droid, but they could have reduced effectiveness (like weapons) if not certified. So despite having certs for combat droids only in the combat professions, they would still be very effective tanks for crafters (who cares if it does less damage? it'll protect you anyways).

Defenitely, combat droids need to be disposable (decay much faster than the current rate). We need a decent turnover of droids, simillar to armor. This point alone would make newbies think twice about putting their droids in the line of fire, while successfull merchants/crafters could just buy another when it's kaput.
