Thread: Droid Engineer as a Basic Profession

Ok hear me out before you flame me please.

Seperate DE from the Artisan Profession but keep it a tradeskill profession.

Make the Droid Engineer a Basic Profession that deals in the creation of the types of droids we have now, as well as combat droids up to a functionality of lv10-15.

After attaining Master DE, have them able to gain skill in the Droid Commander Advanced Profession, which focuses on droid combat, and Droid Commander only Droids. Probot Droids and Battle Droids would be examples of DC only droids.

DE will be the crafting side of the profession, and DC will be the combat side. What works best about this is that DC would actually be an Advanced Profession that would heavily rely on its BasicProf skills(droids batteries, repairs, etc.)

An interesting idea. I think it would actually work better to have the Droid Handler/Commander profession be the base profession, though, and have Droid Engineer be the elite profession.

Adding a bunch of non-combat crafters as "excess baggage" to a combat profession doesn't hurt anything. Inept fighters don't do anything but get themselves killed, so it's not like they'd be taking anything away from the rest of the Droid Commanders/Handlers.

Adding a bunch of non-crafter combat types to a crafting profession causes problems because they have a tendency to dump product into the economy without an understanding of what it is worth. This can wreck the economy, and is one of the reasons that so many people oppose a hybrid DE in the first place.

Of course it's not possible to do it this way, though, because of all the existing Droid Engineers. How would you deal with them suddenly needing a new and different pre-requisite? Plus neither way solves the "problem" of being too dependent on Master Artisan. At least the way we're currently set up, though, we have already paid for Novice Artisan and the Engineering tree so picking up Master Artisan is only 60% of a second profession. Your system would make it 100% of a second profession.

Dev's could always move a lot of droid related schematics into DE/DC from Artisan (A Droid Battery would HAVE to be Novice DE IMHO). Or Dev's could make Artisans a little more droid reliant.

-Protocol Droids as the only viable Player Vendor

-Binary Load Lifters that empty Hoppers

-Astromech Droids that repair/maintain Homes/Harvesters/Other Buildings

All of the above would natural decay over time, and require Batteries. That's where the DE comes in, as your friendly neighborhood DE repairman! ^_^

Anywho, I think that would balance the DE reliance on Artisan, if only a little bit.

Nah not for it. Why?

1. You're saying mix a combat class and a crafting class. They will never do it. And if they do you'll have Creature Handlers and Bioengineers screaming.

2. In my opinion, Droid Engineer is not for dummies. A lot of basic profession players are dummies. You have to work hard to get Droid Engineer. In fact, in my opinion again, I think DE should ONLY branch off of Master Artisan, NOT Engineer.

3. Just because you can make a Combat Droid does not mean you know how to use it, and vice-versa. What many DE's miss about this argument is a comparison. Can Weaponsmiths use T-21's? No, but they make them. Can all Doctors use Stimpack E's? Not if they don't take the right tree, but they make them. And can Bioengineers use the pets they make? No.

Actually, it's not mixing Combat and Crafting Classes at all. Any Player can stop at Droid Engineer. No one has to take the combat Commander route.

Basic Profs. are not "for dummies." That's a very general statement with no real backing. I think one of the biggest problems in SWG is that basic profs. get so little usage after Elite profs are mastered. Basic Prof. Skills should be the backbone of Elite classes, and should always be useful (though not overly uber.) That is, in effect, what I am trying to do by having DC become available after DE. DC would rely heavily on DE to craft the droids it will use in combat. DC would also get some schematics like Probot and the Ep.1 Battle Droid.

3. Just because you can make a Combat Droid does not mean you know how to use it, and vice-versa. What many DE's miss about this argument is a comparison. Can Weaponsmiths use T-21's? That's very true. However, creating a gun is different from creating a Droid. More soul goes into making a droid. You are creating an Artificial Life Form, hand picked from the best parts you can muster. Artoo is more than a T-21, and I think that personal relationship makes DE/DC a much better candidate for "pet fighting" than just a normal Artisan Class.

Are you saying you could just hop in game and become a DE right from the start ??? This would totally suck for everyone that has been a DE for the last 8 months. This would never happen in a million years.

The only way for high level combat droids to get into the game at this point is either via Certs with associated skill point sinks or a totally new class, like the droid handler..comander, controller, whatever they want to call it now.

Why would it suck? It's not like they would be taking Droid Engineer AWAY from all the old school DE's. I'd rather see them get rid of CH. Droid's should be the only pets in SWG as far as I'm concerned.

Any discussion about this is pretty useless as it has been clearly stated that the prequeresits for an existing profession will never ever be changed. And moving DE to a basic profession would be a major change and in my opinion very unfair to the other elite crafting professions.

Good points everyone. I think the bottom line is that they would never make DE a non-elite profession and would never link DH to DE. The format the professions have taken, it's safe to assume that neither will ever happen.
