I was very excited about the survey droids when I first heard about them. After reading the post by 421, it sounds like yet another thing the devs screwed up.
100 units of rare gems? You've got to be kiding me. These things shouldn't be rare and expensive. They should be fairly cheap. Cheap enough that you sent out a dozen or more a week. I'm guessing that it would be cheaper just to buy a tround trip ticket or two. Not only could I sample using every survey device, I could get stats if something looked interesting.
I had been talking to a DE friend of mine, I'd planned on ordering some of these. Now I think I'll be canceling that order. I definately think DE needs some love, and I'd be happy to buy droids if they provided some function to me. These survey droids arn't going to do much for me. As it stands now, about the only real use for these things is to detect a resource shift without going there myself.
But who cares what I say right? Who the heck am I to he questioning mighty SOE? I'm a potential customer, a medical resource dealer. I'm the guy that would love to buy your droids if they were worth it. I'm also the guy that won't spend 5k on a droid when I can make the round trip myself for 3k.
I would buy some if they provided stats, or if they were cheaper then round trip tickets. This would probably at least mean dropping the rare gems as components. I'd be happy if I could send out a droid, then send another to get stats. I know pub 7 was a big disappointment, especially for the DEs. Pub 8 isn't looking any different.

On test center the survey droids have multiple uses up to 10 + so a 5k droid will save you money in the long run. Personally I would rather just launch a survey droid to find out if the Chemical in Dantooine has de-spawned rather than wait aroud a starport.

Perhaps they will be cost/time effective to see if that spawn of lok wheat is still around while im on corellia. My point is, that they could be so much more then that.
