I don't get it. I choose a survey mission and it has no starting point. Just a persons name. after running around like a chicken with his head cut off looking for this person, I gave up. I used the find command and it did not find him. Am I suppose to check all the planets, if so, it is not worth it.

Can someone give me some details to simplify these missions.

The mission tells you to find a specific concentration of a resource. It must be at least 512 meters away from the starting point (the mission terminal). Go away from the term and survey for the resource. Once you are at least 512 meters from the term and find a concentration of at least the amount required in the mission, you will receive your payment.

A better way to do it, is to go survey a spot in excess of 70% for Gas (easier to get high numbers). Waypoint it. Then go the mission terminal and load up 2 high paying survey missions for Gas. Waypoint the mission terminal. Now run to the first waypoint with the mission terminal waypoint loaded as well into the new waypoint display (Options, Misc to turn it on) that shows distance nicely.

when you get to 550 meters (the 512 reported on screen is wrong), survey for the material that you selected at the start that had a high percentage. If its high enough at that point you get your rewards, if not then run a bit further towards your first waypoint until you find the point that does report a 70% resource value) and then survey there to get your rewards. Waypoint this new point. this way you are running the minimal distance required.

Now just run back and repeat till you are bored stiff and much richer.
