Are there any obvious technical reasons why we couldn't have DE crafted combat droids of any particular power that are treated as "faction pets" instead of "normal" pets/droids? Overt players of either faction are already able to pull troopies that have significant combat capability (what is the CL of an AT-ST, for example?). They can already buy these faction pets with credits, due to the booming faction point economy, or at least they could the last time I checked. Therefore, why not let overt players pull out a combat droid instead of a normal faction pet? There would be no real change to the game balance that I can see.

One of the rationales I've seen used to justify the lack of combat droids is that they would be restricted to military use, if they were present at all. If they were treated as faction pets, this would be addressed as well, since the overt players are the defacto active military, on both sides of the conflict. Heck, if the combat droids are in any way cool, this might even help to get some more people to become involved in the GCW. I know I might be tempted to go overt more often if I could have a "Roger-Roger" combat droid or even a droideka tagging along with me.

Anyway, this seems like a win-win option to me. DEs would get to craft cool combat droids. Players would get to buy and use them, provided they are willing to go overt in order to use them. Balance is maintained, or at least it is not affected any more than it already is by the existence of faction pets already.

Is there some obvious problem with this approach that I have overlooked?

I believe TH has already said theyve got faction droids comingsometime in the future.

This is something Ive been cooking in my head and was thinking of posting an idea about it. Just havent had the time to sit and write it. Not only droid faction pets but other ideas on how other crafting professions (especially architects) can be part of the GCW. Many have given this same idea before, but doesnt hurt to summarizethis for the devs again about tieing craftable items into faction pets and other items.
