You would need to Master it to make money really. Yes you can make some money, but nothing like Armor or Weapons. If you are trying to fund SW with DE something is wrong. SW's make far more money then DE's.

DE isn't profitable till master
if u need a funding pro pick up commando, get flamer IV, go to dant, and use flame cone 1 on mokks for 32k creds a mission
u will need to run back and fourth for this to work, and i use 80% comp armor/buffs with ti.. but it's my money grinder till i take off on a crafting pro

My biggest money maker are my Power 57 Bomb droids which sell for 225k for a crate of five. The ability to make the detonation module is not granted until master DE.

and to answer the question of is it profitable well, i have been a Master DE for about five months and have made about twenty million credits gross. After the cost of factories, harvesters and skill tapes i havea net profit of about half that.

Well DE is profitable if you absolutly dedicate yourself to it. It takes alot more time, money, resources, and endurance to make good money as a DE. If all you want is money go WS or AS, you make more money pound for pound than a DE. But you can make money as a DE. It will take you 5 months to become master, another 3 to become respectible, it will take master till you can even think about making profit. This is also true forother professions, but with DE its extemely tough. Just have to confirm your integrity.

I cant agree...
If you have the resources already available to grind & you use macros (as you should) thenyou can master DE very quickly, one of the best guides is in the FAQhere:

As for whether its profitable.. Yes it is, if you apply the 3 rules of marketing, Price, Product, Place.
Dont let anyone discourage you from this career, its great and seriously underestimated on my server at least.
Get to know the career along the way & you'll be up there with the best of them in no time.
Good luck m8

I don't think anybody was saying that you couldn't make money as a DE. You can. It was just being said that you wont make as much money as other professions, especially fast cash.
For example, the origional poster wanted to fund ShipWright with DE. That would mean he would need to grind up DE, get all the resources to make "good" droids, establish a market base, then sell droids. You are not talking something that is going to be fast or easy. He isn't talking about being s DE to stay (or it didn't seem like it.)
Even if an AWESOME DE makes 1 million a day, a decent Shipwright can make 5 million a day. So there really shouldn't be any need to fund SW with DE.

With JTL I make money from unprogrammed chips and flight computers mostly. I do sell a few Astro Droids too.
I will also do custom orders but as I am a near master pliot I don't have much time to create other droids. I was away from the game for 8 months and came back 1 week before JTL was released. I had 200k to my name, now I have 1.3 million cash, an A-Wing, X-Wing and tons of parts for my ships.
I'm a happy camper.
