I currently have 3 droids, ones a med droid, other is combat and last is a simple R2 unit that really does nothing but he was the first droid i got.I find the only one i really use is the med droid and even then he only serve's me a purpose when i need to buff and heal.I want to know how many things can i make one droid do?Do all droids serve only one purpose?I also never see droids running around with people in game.In the movies droids played a very important role in the community.R2 was a information and dara droid while 3-CPO was a communication droid.Anyways what all can a droid benifit me with right now?And do you as a DE think there needs to be a bigger need for full time droids?

By using an Advanced R3 droid, you can actually have a droid that does 6 different things. This is the max.

However, some droids, like Combat, Stimpack, or Harvest function much better if you dedicate the entire droid to that function.

*Straker Atrella: Dark Jedi * Atrella's Wench: Master Droid Engineer / Artisan / Scout / Merchant * Dark Vortex: Ranger / Rifleman * Havana:Musician / Dancer / Image Design * Enigmatica : Doctor / Swordsman* CrazyEyes: Role playing BH.

Additionally, you'll find themed droids to be a common configuration. For example, the doc droid may have private crafting station, food crafting, medical rating, item storage, stim pack, and another function useful for a doc on the go. Entertainer droids may have some variation on the 6 visual effects, one or more playback modules, and possibly item storage for dancers with a large wardrobe.

Be sure to check out Section 2 of the DE 101 guide. It gives a brief description of each module and what it can do and lists how many modules each droid can have.

To give an you an idea of the versatility of a droid such as the ADV R3, here is a list of what I have installed on one of my personal droids

  • Level 6 Item Storage

  • W/G/D Crafting Station

  • Structure Maintenance Module

  • Combat Module

  • Level 5 Data Storage

  • Structure Crafting Station

The single combat module may not make it the most powerful combat droid around, but it adds just enough combat function to give Calous, a non-combat toon, the ability to check harvesters and factories, without being incapped.

As for the comment about not seeing many people use droids.....

Droids have had a very negative overview by many people over the course of this game. Droids and Droid Engineering is one of the, if not the most, buggiest aspects of the entire game. Many of the features that we now take for granted did not work in the intial first few months of the game going Live. Over the last 2 years, almost all of the droid functions have been bugged at one point or another. To many people, the first impression that they had about a droid was ringed in negative feelings, either through first hand knowledge or from word of mouth. And its the word of mouth that is usually the big buzz killer for most of the potential droid users. I've had people ask me if Item Storage was working correctly, 16 months after it was fixed, because they were told by someone at some point that Item Storage swallowed items. 16 months ofperfectly working Item Storage and some people are leary of using the function because of something that they were told, by someone who used the feature once and had lost an item. This is a typical example of many peoples perceptions in the game.

The other major problem with droid use is that most people haven't a clue as to what a droid can do. Weapons, Food, Clothing, and Armor are pretty much self explainatory, in function. Even creature pets are pretty straightforward. Droids, on the other hand,. are have a mysterious nature about them. The only documentation about droids and their use are player created. This is fun from the point of view of one of the people who helped to 'write the book' on the subject matter, but when it comes to trying to promote a business and finding out that you need to educate majority of your customer base, this small little joy quickly fades away. Droid use and functions are highly undocumented. Crafting Stations and Medical modules are easily understood, but are limited to a small cross section of the game community. The only module that can be used by anyone is the Item Storage module, but seems to be seeing less regular use now that storage limits have been increased, across the board - well across the board everwhere except for the Item Storage modules.

Droids should have a stronger role in SWG. They are one of the most iconic features of the Star Wars Universe and would add a mighty chunk of Star Warsy-ness to the game, if handled properly. Unfortunatly, Droids have not been handled properly in SWG, as of yet. Droids tend to fall under the 'almost really useful, but..' category. Of course, the best thing that could be done to change it from 'almost really useful, but..' to almost really useful' would be a mighty healthy application of bug fixes.

Sorry for the ranting. Needed to get it out of my system.

Just as an add on to this, it does help that I am only 3303 DE, and can't make any of the top end droids yet, but I like to specialize my droids as well.

I.E.:

Med droids: 110 med ratings + Food / Chem crafting stations

Crafting droids: Various crafting stations (Weapon, Droid, Generic / Food, Chem / Clothes) + 10 item storage

Entertainer droids: Various FX and / or playback modules

Astromech: Self explanitory

"Service" droids: A power droid also equipped with a droid repair module

Like I said, a lot of that has to do with the fact tho that I am only 3303, so by mixing and matching I am effectively "gimping" the droid. However, I just don't see myself doing too much mixing and matching even when I can make R3 advanced.
