Ok, I glanced through the forums and didn't see anything on this yet so I thought I'd throw it up. Just some nice infofrom Gamespy's "Jump to Lightspeed" preview.

"True to Star Wars fiction, most spaceship will have a slot for an R2 astromech droid. This isn't just any droid, though, it's the same one that players have as pets on the ground. Astromechs will be outfitted with a number of new abilities that directly translate into enhanced spaceship capabilities, including the ability to repair a spaceship during combat. "

Looks like we should see another spike in droid sales when the space expansion comes out along with some new modules to make R units truly "astromech" droids.
