Thread: Which star wars is gospel???
The movies are the only "cannon" as far as George Lucas is concerned.
Games need a little flexibility in order to be fun.
For example, "real" war (I was in the persian gulf in 1990)is best defined as: waiting around foreverin miserable conditions to do something very very very un-fun. (You do it for other reasons, but not because it's "fun").
a "game" about war, one the other hand, needs to be fun.
Similarly, games about Star Wars need to be fun, fair, and balanced, above all else...because it is a game, not a movie. There needs to be some flexibility with the license, and I think Lucas seems to understand that.
Actually, there is a strict heirachy(sp?) of canon. It's somewhere on Force.net if the dedicated want to dig for it.
But it goes something along the lines of The Movies supercede all others.
Then the Books for the OT supercede everything except for the Movies, when the OT books and the Movies come into conflict, the Movies win, except for obvious mistakes, such as the rank insignia issues.
From there, I don't remember how the heirachy goes.
And for the record
I'm not one of those SW Nerds. I just happened to read a thread on this same topic two or three weeks ago on the HTF forums and remember pieces of it.
To clarify, I don't remember how it goes, but I know it goes something along the lines of Radio show supercedes this, extended universe supercedes that, RPG supercedes the other thing, etc.

Thanks all.. I just wanted to know why the designers didn't use any info used in many sources. There are sooo many creatures, droids, people... ugh! Oh well...
Not my prob... I just pay to play!
G'day all...
Has anyone played West End Games (d6) star wars? Not the crappy D&D3ed verison out now... I know Mr. Lucas can change anything at anytime but W.E.G. have so much info in them that is now contridicted by the movies and 20d star wars. Which is considered right?
If you look at any of the old books, especially the droid guide, there are sooooo many droids that they could use both combat and helper droids. Sorry but the destroyers aka droideka(sp?) were not in any of the old books or novels and that i assume (gasp!) there were not those kind of droids or creatures that were pets... I understand people love the pets and tanking... but something matching the books and story lines would be nice...
We just need things that are what they should be used for... a probot or droidekasare not something you walk around with.
ugh... sorry just had to get some of it off my chest and this might not be the right place but everyone wanting droids that are cool looking are getting to me.
Start the flames!
Anyhow, because of LFL's refusal to "canonize" anything outside the movies, any questions of authority and continuity are necessarily subjective and relative. On one hand, this allows third party licensees a little leeway in implementing new ideas (unlike the Star Trek license, which heavily restricts writers from every direction). On the other hand, the lack of an "EU Gospel" leads to many, many sad and pathetic nerd screaming matches on the Internet.
I personally take the position (possibly unpopular) that having strict EU continuity adherence is slightly less important than implementing fun-to-play game systems. If that means bunches of players walking around with IG-series assassin droids (which, by all EU accounts should be impossible, or at least very hard to justify -- leaked blueprints, perhaps?) then I can live with that if it's how we add value to the game as a game.
