Thread: From a Combat Class
I'm currently a Commando/Smuggler, but the one thing I always wanted to be from the start was a Droid Engineer -- why? I love droids in Star Wars. Combat Droids, R2 units, Protocol...they're all awesome!
Especially combat droids, they just look and seem awesome.
I know CH's are murmuring that Combat Droids would "nerf" CHs somehow, but I hope you all get the droids you've worked and earned for. When us Commando's were calling about how bad our class was early on, the Developers listened...I only hope you all get the respect you deserve.
I may honestly drop some combat classes to be a DE Eventually, my hope is to be a combat droid supplier and user...it would just be more fun than constantly setting things on fire.
G'Luck to you all, and stick with it. Eventually the Devs will come around and realize that droids, not creatures are what Star Wars is. ![]()
From the hints TH has dropped it sounds like the first combat droids are going to be Protocol and Repair droids with blasters...
And he made a comment about not making Probots too strong as this would devalue CH pets.
I've lost hope in getting fixed.

And also TH has alluded that the combat droids will not be any better than the best non-CH creature pet (900-1200 HAM) due to the fact that any player can use one, regardless of skill level. That would devalue CH pets in the game if we were given combat droids with 10,000 HAM. This is why I pulled all my droid vendors and have put up Speeder and Swoop vendors in their place. At least these are items that people will want for a while.
To alleviate all the new complaining about devaluing creature handler pets, I propose they make a "droid handler" class, that can take full benefit and use from the 'overpowered' droids that the DE's should be able to make.
It seems fully to me that DE's are a crafting class, without an audience to craft for. Making crafting stations is fine, but that is equivalent to master weaponsmiths only being able to make CDEF's.
Make battlesuits that commando's can use. Throw in intelligent weapon upgrading to improve accuracy as another line for normal weapons...
But then the starwar movie freaks would complain thats not starwars enough, because we never saw a blaster with an intelligence chip plugged into it, aiming for its master. ;P
To be honest, I dont understand why they dont make DE class just like CH. Give droids a class level, and as you progress up the columns, you get to call more or higher class droids. Non DE gets a probot as they are to be same level as non CH pets. The game mechanics are aready there. But that might make DE equal with CH, and we cant have that in a Star Wars game.
I hear "DE's are not combatants !" But whether you like it or not, you ARE. Or you die on simple harvester runs that are camped by deadly spawns (I think harvesters attract them). An CH's are not necessaily combatants either. They are "Wranglers". But yet these wranglers are more uber than commandos. Where is the logic in that?
Graf VonSoden MDE Ssgt (Imperial Reserves)
That's pathetic.
I'm even starting to get angry with this game, cause they're ignoring classes they need (Carbineers are supposed to be the frontline assault troops, not commandos) Droid Engineers...ugh.
Money money money.

No, we aren't. We're no more combatants than Weaponsmiths, Armorsmiths, Tailors, Image Designers, or Chefs.
Just because we make the droids that ANYONE can use on a harvester run does not make us combatants anymore than it makes EVERYONE a combatant.
I have never ever kill anything at all. Im a pure crafter, Im proud of it and I pretend to keep on playing this way![]()
The only time I took part in a combat was to "help" (if it can be called help cos I only have my CDEF pistol lol)one of my guildmates.
Here's the problem as I see it:
The definition of a Creature Handler would be someone that tames and trains animals to do their bidding. Creature Handlers can not simply train and sell ANY creature - creatures have to be controlled by someone skilled in controlling them. A real-life example would be a tiger trainer in a circus; they can train the tiger to do tricks, but if Joe Schmoe comes out of the crowd to try and get the tiger to do tricks, it will probably not end well for poor Joe.
Thus, the major role of the Creature Handler is to handle the creatures. Thier minor role is to be able to provide "less lethal" trained creatures to the larger public. Think of this as taking your dog to get obedience training.
The definition of a Droid Engineer would be someone that builds, manufactures, and repairs droids (you know, ENGINEER). They assemble them and do all the things that are technical in nature. However, the products that they provide are directed ONLY at the general populace. They have to be "user friendly." In SWG, this ends up being interpreted the same way as the CH's "lethality quotient" (sorry, I'm just sick of talking about creature levels). If you follow the same logic that is being used for CHs, then what that means is that you require more skill to use droids of greater complexity.
So here's the crux: it all comes down to people needing to have enough skill to use what they own. If you're not a creature handler, then I'm sorry, this trained pit bull is the best I can do for ya. If you don't know how to properly operate a droid, this probot is the safest thing I can reccomend.
If we want to make stronger combat droids, we first need a target audience. That means that someone out there has to obtain the skill to use droids effectively. I don't think a "Droid Handler" class is the way to go with this... I'd rather see some sort of certification system (which has also been discussed on this forum many many times). I also would like to see that certification system stay out of the elite classes, because if you're leveling up in combat, why would you need stronger droids?
I'll end by saying that it is not my opinion that we should turn Droid Engineers in to "Robotic Weapon"-smiths. I'd rather see a much more diverse set of droid uses that would make people want to buy droids -I mean REALLY make people want to buy droids - for reasons other than combat.
