I am clueless about droids. Is there a type of droid that can help gather samples?

are you refering to DNA samples or resource ?

No, but Architects can make harvesters to pull resources out of the ground

an interplanetary survey droid will consume a survey tool and let you know what resources are available on which ever planet you send it to, but it wont tell you where to find them or what their stats are.
