Simple question - can I make cash as a DE in the current state of the game? (Once start getting to the higher levels, of course.)

Yes you can once you get a hang of the economy, what sells, what doesn't, and keeping a well stocked vendor with competative prices, you can make decent money.

I spent the first month losing money as a DE. At the time I was also an Architect and sold lots of houses to keep me going until the DE business picked up.

You'll find Bounty Hunters will be your bread and water at this time. Stock up on seekers/probes and when you get Master, make bomb droids. All other droids will probably be custom orders until they get things sorted out.

Depends on many things.
1.) what is your definition of making money?
2.) how many DE there are on you server
3.) how good you are at marketing your product
I do sell a lot of seekers/arakyds more then anything else in fact but i make very little money off those. They average about 5k a crate on my server and i sell mine at 9 and 10k just so i dont have to do constant runs.
Most other droids are very profitable (relativley) but, generally, other then combat droids, there is a lot of marketing that goes into getting those sales.

If you are a Master Artisan / Droid Engineer you can make money on Bounty Hunter droids. Both Seekers and Probes sell well. But you need the Master Artisan components so you need that skil.

You can always find a Master Artisan to make you a schematic. Just bring him the resources and then do your own factory runs at your convenience.
