I think the US Navy beat SOE to the punch on R2's with guns.
Take a look, I'm pretty sure that is an R2 packing heat.

I was standing on the fantail of the USS George Washington (CVN-73) and had one pointed at me before 
the gunners were cycling it and I looked up just as it cycled down towards me
we call it CIWS (pronounced see-wiz) stands for Close In Weapons System.
When I was in the navy, I worked on the block 1a... 1.2 seconds and there goes 100 rounds. Actually, it is way more impressive. It has a full auto mode that you can set it to when the sh$t hits the fan. It will automatically slew and engage any imbound target thats moving at 600mph or higher. It will fire as many rounds as necessary to kill the target. I have seen bursts that have gone 7-8 seconds long. The gun also traverses at a rate of 90 degrees in less than a second. Its search and fire control radar are so precise, it can detect and track something with a radar signature crossection that is about the size of a head of a pin. The navy had to put a line item in helo flight operation procedures to turn the gun off because it would lock on to the helo rotor blades as the blade swung tward the gun and the break lock as the blade swung around and headed away from the gun. We did target practice with a leer jet that towed a dummy drone via a 2 mile cable. Once the phalanx shot the drone, it then proceeded to shoot the incomeing shrapnel that was heading tward the ship at 600+ mph, then when it was done with that, we had to shut it off because it was walking up the tow cable!

Awesome story! **edit**, I knew the Phalanx was hardcore, but I had no idea! Any chance of getting a miniature version as an automobile theft deterrent system?
