We all wanted a certification system in place for droids. One that required skill point expenditure over and above what it takes just to gain a skill. The Dev's didn't like this idea and said everyone would go out and buy a combat droid to give them and edge.

They are doing a system wide combat revamp and they can't be bothered with adding useful combat droids into the mix while they are working on it. Something is wrong in this picture.

Ok, I have read a lot on both views of the DH/cert discussion. Both sides have merit, but seem to be missing the main target of combat droids. Lets look at this both logically and realistically.

Who needs higher than CL-10 pets? Crafters, medics, entertainers.

What skills should be needed to deal with the day to day workings of automatons? Engineering.

Do you need high end droid skills to tell a droid to shoot that which is attacking you? No.

My solution is this.

Add a cert system where low to mid level combat droids are placed in the first engineering box, starting with slightly higher level droids and escalating as you move up to Engin. 4. All high mid to high end combat droids would then reside in the Master DE box, as well as the ability to call more than one droid at a time.

This allows for the people who need a little bit of help in the combat field to be able to hold there own for a little while, while not creating uber combat people who spent thier skills in rifleman, tka or whatever. Crafters and the like who chose not to, or who cannot due to Skill point usage, are the main target of these combat droids. if they spend the 15 points for Artisan, and climb the engineering box, you get a payment of sorts for the droids, as well as the technical know how to control them. Plus you only get use of a droid which can help you in a jam, unlike the current combat droids, but don't get an uber tank which takes away the realism of the game.
