Thread: Simple fix to the Droid Engineering dilemma.
Sheesh Relic and others. Why are you implying that having droid certifications mean we can't use our own droids? It's not exclusive you know? For DEs, we could get certified on a droid as soon as we can make it. Other classes get certifications in some steps in their career, for us it would be automatic. Obviously, whoever knows how to build a droid should be able to control it... he programmed it!
Certifications would help DEs if and only if, DEs get certifications as well.
If your plan plays out as intended SirWalter, then i can except that. The rest of these pro certification boneheads are pushing a cert system that would alow only certain combat professions to use certain battle droids, effectivly stipping us of our ability to use our own droids.
I will never waver to the idea that a MDE cannot useall of the droids they build. Thats nonsense. This is the only class that has a full understanding of droids. Even this rediculous DH class wouldnt understand droids as much as the actual creator.
I hope SOE has the insite into this. If they dont, they really shouldnt be working on a game such as this.
Certifications for droids in any sense of the word is complete and utter b.s.
Someone who power plays to get money to buy a high end droid on their first day? Why not? Should someone be punished if they power played their way to an elite skill on the first day? No they shouldn't (and trust me, it is possible, head to Endor with the right group, and you can get to Novice Creature Handler in a day).
The fact of the matter is this: If a newbie wants to spend all of his time getting money to get himself a Droideka on day 1 (example, because Droidekas are talked about as tho they will be our uber-droid), then that's his choice. Guess what? He just spent that time making money to buy a droid, instead of leveling up his character.
If you don't want newbies getting and supporting high end combat droids, certifications are not the answer. The answer is, what someone else posted (I am sorry, I can't remember his name) about powering the droid. Make the high end combat droids require an advanced droid battery, that takes a lot more resources to make (and I'm not talking just an increase from now, I'm talking a large increase, not sure of specific numbers because I don't know the schematic for the regular battery off hand), which will result in Droid Engineers -not- wanting to give these away forfree because of the amount of money in resources that would be spent, and the high end combat droid will require multiples of these advanced batteries at a time to support them (Think of how a CD boombox system takes more powerful batteries, and more batteries period, as a portable CD player).
This pushes for having a regular cash flow to support these batteries, which calls for a higher level class generally speaking, which will deter week 1 newbies from trying to uber themselves with these very high end droids, but not regulate who can and cannot use these droids (which are an item that anyone should be able to use), and allow so that if someone is willing to put in the time and effort to get the resources to support this kinda thing, that they deserve to be able to have it, even if they are day 1 newbies.
Quite honestly, droid certifications is the worst idea I have ever heard regarding Droid Engineering, and this game in general.

I agree completely with this statement.
And BlueMorgoth, i will never agree that a DE had to be completely a crafting profession. Stop compairing us with other professions. We are unique. Droid Engineering is what you make of it. Pre-beta & Post-Beta. Thats how it was designed. Your statement on what it 'should' be is pure speculation.
CHworks fine
DE not
so just implement things that work with CH for DEs, also not much work for the devs.
Droids are pets so it cant be a crafting only proffession, if everyone can use them they have to be useless and if noone can use them thats...
weak droids for everyone strong droids for DEs, even if some people want to creat droids without using them in combat, they can still do so, but its not requiered to force the majority of players that want to use them in combat to craft only.the proffession can even be split into DE and droid controller or combat DEs if requiered, just like BE and CH.
What initially appealed to me to become a Droid Engineer was originally the fact that I could craft my own combat droids to use, because in all games of this type, I like pets. I like pets in EQ, I like pets in Morrowind, I like Summoner because I can summon pets, etc...
So I am a Creature Handler / Droid Engineer so I can be that pet master guy dude Rodian bug "Don't bring the Raid" thingy.
However, after I got into Droid Engineering, and looked at all the stuff that I -interpreted- we could do, that's what really hooked me. Droids to hold items for me. Droids that I could use to craft items. Droids that I thought could heal me (hopefully they will allow surgical droids to do that someday), and yes, droids that I could use in combat.
I don't want Droid Engineering to be a combat class. However, we can make combat droids for a reason, and we should be able to use them. If a droid handler class is implemented, I am gone. I joined Droid Engineer so I could use the droids that I created, both utility and combat, and if they take that away from me, I am done (since I am more into Droid Engineering than I am Creature Handler).
That's why I am against a cert system, because it could essentially take away my ability to use what I create, and do what I signed up for. More skill points would not be given, so I would not be able to be the character that I want to be, since I'd have to give up skills.
Combat droids certs in combat classes would do the same for me.
And just random certs that come from leveling up said amount of skills, well, that just seems to unrealistic, for lack of a better word (mind going blank).
My point about the newb working to get money to level up was that with a maintenance system in place for combat droids, a newbie working to be able to pay those maintenance fees is just as legit as a newbie leveling up to get higher skills in a day.
And if devs think money is so easy to get, where is mine? Because I have been struggling with money since day 1 of this game.
