"any kind of droid module that augments a player's innate skills isn't going to happen."
Then what's the point of having a droid? I have two right now that sit in my data pad and don't do a thing. I only bought them because I didn't have anything else to spend my money on, and because I thought I could just dump them in my house for effect.
The "cool" factor only works for about 5 minutes. "Wow, cool droid. What's it do? Nothing? Oh." If it isn't useful, then it isn't used. The only people with droids right now are medics, because medical droids augment the medic's innate skills. And sorry to break it to you, but combat droids aren't really a big deal, and despite some vocal clamoring for them by a few, for most players, they never really were.
So basically what you're saying is that "We see the one profession that uses droids, and the reason they use them. We have decided that no one else will be able to use useful droids."

Then what about a more practical use - as I said above, if a smuggler has a slicing droid out, they only go through one laser knife per slice instead of two.
I think a lot of people would appriciate anything that smugglers could do with droids besides craft like everyone else. Droids and slicing go together like doctor buffs and vassarian brandy.

Or, perhaps, with a Smuggler droid, you could attempt to re-slice containers that failed the first time....
(NOT to double-slice wep/armor... that's an exploit. But to Re-try, if the first attempt failed.)

Ultimately, this is the problem. Slicing droids and any kind of droid module that augments a player's innate skills isn't going to happen. Its basically "free" skills and abilities and I can't sell that unless we also agree to lower everyones innate skills to balance it out...and I can't see everyone saying, "lets nerf everyone so we can have cooler droids".
The other thing is that harvest maintenance, surveyingand another class of abilities isn't a viable alternative because of the technological limitation. However this DE effort has let the devs lay the groundwork to add more modules in the future.
This was a strong start and like everything else, it will continue to develop.
I'm just not buying the "free" skills argument. Everyone in the game uses tools orweapons or equipment to enhance their abilites, productivity or lethality. Factories, better guns, harvestors and on and on. Thesethings all give the various professions a "leg up" on the next guy. Is a harvestor a "free" sampler (maint and energy requirements aside)? Is a Factory a "free" crafter? Is a gun a "free" killer?
Droids COMPLIMENT just like any other peice of equipment in the game. Give them to us.

Can a Doctor reach the full potential of his class without the extra 10% bonus a high-quality medical droid provides?
Better remove that ability, and those mobile crafting stations that make travelling crafters possible are also a bad idea. Droids already exist to enhance the existing abilities and classes...I think, OrionsByte, that you should not advocate the "no checkers" concept. Are you sure you play a Droid Engineer?

Your "extra checkers" argument is bunk, and I wish you would stop using it.
You just gave all chefs the ability to make foods that give the EXACT same abilities that DE's are asking for on droids. There is NO difference whatsoever between buying cheap foods for bonuses and buying droid batteries so that your droid stays powered and gives you bonuses (note: droids should not work in any way, shape, or form unless powered).
Skill tapes also give extra checkers. I know tons of players that continually farm skill tapes and sell every type possible in bulk. They are easily accessable and NEVER decay or go away. In fact, every one of my favorite crafters has a suit of clothing with skill tapes that maxes their experimentation.
All the new limited schematic weapons and theme park rewards give extra checkers. All of them have some sort of ability enhancement. Especially the crafter specific belts and toolkits.
Heck, even bioengineers give extra checkers. Their mods give bonuses to attacks, scouting, defenses, and healing. All are cheaply buyable.
You have already built all kinds of "extra checkers" into the game, you just turn a blind eye to them so that you can tell DEs they can't have them. That sucks, and it is hypocritical. If it is good enough for other classes, it should be good enough for DEs.

Here's the thing: if a droid module gives a profession enough of a "bonus" that it basically invalidates anyone else in that profession that does not have a droid, that's not going to happen... that's what he was talking about here, and that's what Kilarny and I were discussing in the post that TH responded to.
I'll recap here for those who don't want to go back and read the original series of posts:
Medical droids give medics 110% efficiency, but the end result is the same. You get fullyhealed. That 110% medical rating does not change the effectiveness of buffs. Therefore, a medic giving buffs with or without a droid is equally effective. So why do most doctors want medical droids? Because it frees them from the confines of the medical center and it does allow them to heal people a little faster. So it's helpful, but it does not make a medic with a droid better than a medic without a droid.
These are the innate abilities that TH is talking about. If smugglers got a bonus to slicing by using a droid, then any smuggler not using a droid would be disadvangtaged. The end result would not be the same... the smuggler with a droid will be more effective than a smuggler without a droid, and therefore would be basically crippled without one. It would be almost like saying, "In order to learn Slicing IV you need 50,000 slicing experience and a slicing droid." Good for us, bad for the smugglers.
That being said, I liked AudioOrgana's idea about allowing them to use less parts to do the slicing... I think this is more workable, but would still need some tweaking. The difference with this one is that while it's a good thing for the smuggler, it makes no difference to those whom the smuggler interacts with (other than potentially lower prices). The end result is the same with or without the droid.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but just sit back and think about it for a sec, and it really does make sense.
