I really like the idea. I've had similar ideas myself, but I'd like to see the droids made disposable, a one shot use droid like BH droids.

Bear in mind that even if the droid is capable of finding a good peak or whatever, someone still has to GO there and put down a harvester. And guess what: Only the first one there gets to use that exact waypoint -- the same waypoint ALL the survey droids find! So he will still have to survey around and find a good unoccupied spot nearby.

I don't want the droids to find the best spot on the planet, but not because it's too powerful -- I want them to find the best LOCAL peak. Otherwise hundreds of people will converge on the same spot on the planet rather than converging on local resource peaks near their base of operations. Finding a local peak still saves the surveyor some of the work -- especially on resources like ore that have very wide shallow distributions, yet also requires the player to find a good starting point (if the resource doesn't show up at all, the droid has no place to go). If the local peak is mediocre, the surveyor must take his droid far away to try again.

The droid surveyor might even be slower than using a swoop bike to survey..... But it lets the player put their time into other projects and enjoy the aspects of the game they prefer.

So, let me get this straight: To advance my character, I have to give up my current abilities?

Droids SHOULD have very powerful functions, it is an elite profession, come on, is anyone suggesting that the ability to quickly survey a planet is anywhere near as powerful as a doctor buff? This has no implication on pvp or combat generally (well perhaps gear could be slightly cheaper), and can be equally beneficial to all professions, creating a droid that could sell very well.

Here's a thought, if it would be too powerful to allow the droid to return the waypoint of the highest concentration, what about having it return a version of the map with the highest concentration in an area (Say dividing the map into 25 squares, and having the areas that the servers already use returning the highest conentration of the material in that area) doesn't remove the need for running around, but it does provide the info that makes the job a whole lot easier. also, time would be a factor in it, you'd hae to wait 10-20 minutes for a survay like that to finish

I Was thinking the same idea of a survey droid today. I think the best idea would be have them reusable and use survey tools and the actual droids may have an "Error Margin" where like say its sends a false waypoint on occasion. Well the higher precent gotten on the survey tool would lower that margin. So requiring about 5 components seems fair and then charge say 5k to map the planetary map for ya so its pretty exspensive to get a full map of that kind and most professions require multiple types of resources. I also think reusable is a good idea so it would cost about 50k a crate and then 5k a survey so its not cheap but for thouse of us who don't have time to speand an house surveying its a nice convenience. I also think this is a great opportunity to impliment the droid cert program I dread them putting in. I think the certification should be given at survey IV so then it takes up 29 skill points so thouse master bounty hunters who run 10 extractors and sell at 6 cpu on the bazaar can't get there hands on em. It would give lvl 4 surveys actually somthing good for the work they did.

Ifthey are reusable, they won't be nearly as good for our profession because they'll suffer from the same problem that all of our other (current) droids suffer from. Namely, that once someone owns one, they never need to buy another. The point of making them charged items is so that we get return customers. We need more items that wear out (or are charged), not more droids that are good forever.

I do like the idea of certing them at Survey 4, though. That's a good way to prevent twinking with them, too.

I really like the idea of a survey droid, but I have a different view on having a survey droid.

I survey for minerals and energy on a daily basis for myself and for others. Usually all I do is go from planet to planet to see if any of the requested materials are in shift, which nine out of ten times, they are not. How about a droid that you send to a planet, tell it a class of resources to look for (i.e. radioactive, copper, etc.)and then after an hour or an hour and a half sends back a report on the names and spects of the resources that are in shift. (I mean if you know you are looking for never-heard-of-that-uminum or never-seen-that-in-my-life copper, it would really help to not spend 2 hours waiting for shuttles to find out that that ryll amorphis gemstone is nowhere in the galaxy, or that the best copper out there has an OQ of 3). I would keep the time down to below an hour and a half because that is the time I can go from shuttle to shuttle and check every planet myself. I really like the idea of having charges on it so that we could finally have a money sink or even better each droid has only one use. However, in my opinion, I don't think it should give any concentration information. Sure you would still have to spend the time actuallysurveying for the resources, but this would give information to whether a shift has occured as well as giving information on the quality of materials available on a planet.

Now I know some of you won't like this idea, because you are going to have to spend the hour or so getting on and off your bike and surveying like I do, however for any weponsmith, armorsmith or architect, (who would be the basecustomers for this) this would save hours of time while allowing a way for DE's to make real money for once.

Please tell me what you think

I would definatley push for this droid. However, if I could suggest that when the droid returns, itproduces a planetary map to which there will be red blotches scattered around indicateing the high percentage areas. The droid will be expendable but when it returns, it will leave a data disk in your inventory that you read and that brings up the map.

That way you can pick the area but once you get into the vicinity, you have to use your tool to find the optimal spot.
