Just tried it... MSE with a level 1 data module. Works like it always has.

The data storage modules can be used for one of two things...or even both:
1) Droid Flight commands (droids needs to be astromech to be used in certain ships, other ships take Flight Computers and not droids). Rebel ships and the ETA-2 use Astromechs
2) Storing schematics
You cannot store waypoints in the data module (at least I had no luck doing that when I tried)
Edit:
You want the Level 6 Data Module - these hold 150 schematics (I believe - or am I comfusing it with the F.C aspects of it?) oh and I'm not sure you can stack them...pretty sure you can't

You are correct sir! These are what you need. Data Storage mod level 6,same as astromech level 6. Once crafted it will show pilots astromech level 6, but it will still be the same schematic data storage. I built about 2 dozen protocol droids like this last night. One great feature for crafters is 10 item storage, 150 data schematic storage, and a crafting unit. That way you can craft at your shop and move your resources and schematics over to the droid. Then once you get to your factories, you have all your resources and schematics in one place and ready to load. Of course protocols only hold 2 mods so I had to build one with item and one with data storage.
To recap, simply look for an astromech level 6 and you will have 150 data schematic storage. The deeds don't show data storage since JTL came out. Also from the great DE101...
If you run across any of these astromechs they will have schematic storage.
Level 1 Data Module = 20 Storage Capacity = Novice Pilot
Level 2 Data Module = 40 Storage Capacity = xxx1 Pilot
Level 3 Data Module = 70 Storage Capacity = xxx2 Pilot
Level 4 Data Module = 110 Storage Capacity = xxx3 Pilot
Level 5 Data Module = 125 Storage Capacity = xxx4 Pilot
Level 6 Data Module = 150 Storage Capacity = Master Pilot

there are 2 things you could be asking about
1) data pad lvls 1-6 these will give your droid astromech, but need the pilot to corresponds with the level .... ie a novice cannot use a lvl 6 only master pilot can.
2) stroage module... posted above.
Now these are only 2 modules ... A r-3 can hold 6(need R unit for astro)
So you can easy put both in...
Hope this helps

Yep, what you have been told so far is true.
Data Modules are mostly used by pilots, however, you can also store schematics in them. For schematics, you can use any level, but level 6 holds the most.
Just do a bazaar search for a level 6 Astromech.
