I don't beleive that Master Artisan is really required, though I do it on my DE. Only reason I've done so is to help out my guild mates with Bikes and MA goods.
If you do want MA in your template, but would also like to fight some... here's my template. Master Artisan, Master Droid Engineer, Master TK, Merchant 3/0/0/0.
I can craft 99% of the stuff I will ever need really, powerboost and kill NPCs that are spawned by my harvesters, and still have my vendor on the planetary map (this takes into assumption that fixes will be made to vendors to prevent people placing and dropping skills).

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Right now I think I am going to go Master DE, Master Artisan, Master Pistoleer, Merchant 3. The only reason I wanted to drop Master Artisan is to get dirty fighting from the smuggler line, but I think it would be wiser to just do without, as this really isnt going to be my primary combat guy.
