If you're xxx1 then you should be able to craft Advanced MSEs. Basically where the R5 has one slot where you can put a module the Advanced MSE has two and you can put one module in each slot.
By the way, glad to hear you're not grinding. I did it the non-grind way (except for novice -> 0001 - this was before publish 7 and at the rate I was selling them it would have taken me about a year to get the box if I hadn't ground it!) and I firmly believe I'm a better DE because of it.
