Thread: Random Droid Questions
Tested both of those and it honestly seemed to make no appreciable difference whatsoever. My guess is that the melee damage is equivalent to ranged damage. Aside from the brief period where the droid closes the same damage is being done. Also, the fact that the R3 possesses melee attacks is pretty irrelevant. When an opponent closes to melee range for a probot the probot just keeps blasting away. It doesn't seem to have any difficulty in using its gun in close.

That's wierd our results are so different Icarus. A couple days after the patch came out I built a probot, R3 and an LE Repair droid with all the combat modules that could fit in each(each individual module rated about 91). In fact I'm sure my post of my results is floating around somewhere. I found that the R3 trounced the probot beating it with 1/4 - 1/3 of it's HAM left. I did two tests because I was surprised. As AO said I prefer the R3 because of it's range option and, well, the shocker weapon looks cool.
That's why I said that some people claimed that the R3 would win, even though it was contrary to my experience.
My guess is that the R3 won because of your modules. When you put 5 modules into the probe you had a rating of 455 and when you put six modules into the R3 you had a rating of 546. This is a 20% difference in combat ratings and even though the astromech does less damage than a probot with an identical rating that difference is enough to give the advantage to the R3.
In the case of my droids the Probot had a rating of 550 while the R3 had a rating of 600, essentially losing 60 points to the cap. Because of that the R3s advantage was reduced from 20% to 9% and that was enough to make the difference.

Icarus,
Thanks for the insight on the ranged vs. melee damage. However, is the attack speed on the R3 the same for melee as for ranged? I would assume so, just checking. If it is, it really is a toss-up. personal preference as far as style of droid then....
My guess, and this is just a guess since I haven't timed things and checked numbers, is that the ranged and melee attacks have identical stats. Same speed, same damage, same to hit. Certainly I didn't notice any significant change in performance on whether it was set melee or ranged. In either case the probot would squeak out a victory.

1) Yes, they can. I have heard that an R3 will defeat a comprable Probot but in my own tests that did not seem to be the case. My personal feelings are that even if this is true the fight is so close as to not make the extra expense of the R3 worth it. That said I still sell a few from time to time to people who just want an R3 unit instead of a probot.
