C-3PX
a psychotic 3PO-series droid, C-3PX was originally owned by the Sith Lord, Darth Maul. Based on the Cybot Galactica TC-series protocol droid, the droid was designed to act as the primary security measure aboard his Sith Infiltrator, and had been infused with Dark Side energy through the mechu-deru skill. C-3PX had been constructed with no less than eighty-three different weapons, and Maul had also programmed the droid himself, so that it loyally followed his orders and could react suitably to almost any situation. Maul and C-3PX allowed themselves to be captured by Bartokk assassins on Ralltiir, during a mission to acquire droid starfighters for the Trade Federation. C-3PX feigned the whiny, worried tone of a protocol droid to further fool the Bartokks. After Maul learned that the Bartokks had been hired by Groodo the Hutt, he arranged for the destruction of the Ralltiir facility. It was believed that C-3PX was still inside when the building exploded. Maul had managed to escape, but C-3PX was left behind. The droid was partially dismantled when it was purchased by Olag Greck, who reprogrammed the droid to be an assassin. C-3PX evaded capture for a while, until it returned to Hosk Station. There, it was involved in a series of strange events when C-3PO's cranium was patched with an X-shaped marking. Both droids were taken for the assassin droid, and both ended up in Olag Greck's gladiator droid arena facing R2-D2. C-3PO survived, but C-3PX was destroyed by the power mallet mounted on R2-D2's Mandalorian battle armor. C-3PX had stun weapons and lasers built into its arms, and had a unique laser weapon built into the back of its head.

Combat droids: illegal, and in clear violation of the empires ruleset.

Protocol droid carrying around a shotgun, and hides it... well still illegal, but less visible...

then again, if you're a rebel in a rebel city, who cares if its illegal to have a combat droid chassis

If I could make an HK-47 Protocol/assassin droids I would have him show all those meatbags what droid engineers can do.

Perhaps the oddest being that could ever become a bounty hunter is a protocol droid. Yet it happened in the case of 4-LOM. This droid answered the call sent out by Darth Vader to capture the Millennium Falcon after the Battle of Hoth. 4-LOM is a humanoid droid, with a matte-black finish that is scarred and pitted. It has an insect-like face with large, compound photoreceptors. 4-LOM carries a massive blaster rifle.

The manufacturers of the LOM unit, Industrial Automaton, could never have guessed that one of their products would deviate so far from its original programming parameters. 4-LOM began his electronic life as a cabin steward aboard a luxury liner. A programming glitch led to antisocial behavior, and the droid eventually sought challenge in stealing valuables from the liner's passengers.

This thievery escalated and attracted the attentions of Jabba the Hutt. Jabba equipped 4-LOM with combat computer systems and the capacity to harm sentients. The ever-crafty Hutt hit upon the brilliant idea of teaming 4-LOM with the Gand bounty hunter Zuckuss. 4-LOM's cold methodical droid logic worked well with Zuckuss' mystical and instinctive ways.

Together, Zuckuss and 4-LOM became a formidable team. Although they failed to find Han Solo for Darth Vader, their hunt did briefly find them a new path in life. 4-LOM and Zuckuss joined the Rebellion against the Empire, only to return to their hunter ways a short time later. During the hunt for Solo, 4-LOM crossed paths with Boba Fett, and was dismembered and temporarily deactivated.

all the exsamples you folks are listing also state they were HEAVILY modified after construction by non standard means...

Dash Rendar's faithful droid companion, Leebo (or LE-BO2D9) is an early model Cybot Galactica LE-series repair droid. The feisty yet reliable droid served as Rendar's co-pilot and backup. Leebo was originally the property of the Esseles portmaster, hired to inspect visiting starships for safety standards. During an inspection, a freighter lifted off of Esseles with Leebo still aboard.

With little else to do, Leebo became a shipboard mechanic. He was swapped dozens of time, each smuggler owner updating the droid with a new set of skills. Before Dash Rendar came into ownership of Leebo, the droid developed a quirky sense of humor belonging to a traveling comedian in the Outer Rim.

Dash's additions to Leebo's repertoire includes enhanced repair skills, a long range, single-channel shielded comlink and piloting skills.

And as far as "why didn't they take notes":

1) the galaxy has gone thorugh rise and fall a few times, it is currently in decline with much lost tech and even lost worlds.

2) combat droids were made illegal after the clone wars. In the same way that our current world policies the manufacture of nukes.

Nope, there WAS a protocol droid bounty hunter named 4-LOM in "The Empire Strikes Back". He had the very same body as C-3PO, except his head unit had large bulbous eyes, like an insect. So the devs ARE following the Star Wars Universe, believe it or not.

not to mention the fact there are hints and rumors from many different sources that assassin droids and securtity droids where still common in use. Just not full scale combat "infantry" droids. Heck the empire was trying out several different styles of assassin droids itself.

Who doesn't think R2D2 could beat the snot outta Darth Vader? Even if Darth tried that telekintic mumbo-jumbo, the monkey piloting R2 would just climb out the top and bitz smackVader with a tire iron.
