Thread: Cerification Methods
I'd like to cast my vote in for the original poster's method. It does sound very balanced and effective. We don't want low level players to have the higher-level droids, but we also don't want to restrict the droids based on profession. This allows only experienced players to get the higher-end droids, but it doesn't limit the type of player who does get them eventually.
I'd argue that maybe some of the "cream of the crop" should be left as Droid Engineer Only, just so that when a large amount of people reach their master levels we don't see a billion Droidekas running around, for instance. Despite being particularly powerful, they should be kept to a minimum for consistency issues and thus left for Droid Engineers only to control.
However, to keep people from becoming "Side Engineers" and multi-skilling just to get the Droideka benefits, I would argue that a Droid Engineer, when he/she has their Droideka out, must then enter into a "Concentration" mode of controlling it. Kind of as if they were at a terminal or had a remote control, they had to concentrate on making the droid do what it is told. That would keep people from using the Droideka along with their other combat skills.
I am going to bump this thread....
If we are going to have to have a cert system for high end combat droids, and I think that Holo will insist on it, I like this idea a lot more than a droid handler class, DE only certs, or combat profession only certs.
I'm still a firm believer that Certs are a terrible idea. While it seems that Holocron may be leaning that way, I'm still of the opinion that he may be viewingit as a solutiononly because they haven't been able to come up with anything else. That, in my opinion, does not mean they (or we) should just bow our heads and succumb to this Certification "solution".
There are alternatives... we had many other ideas floating around out there. We should continue to voice our opinions on this and urge for the abandonment of the Droid Handler idea, as well as silly Certifications that would prevent DE's from using their own creations or high end combat droids.
A developer resigning himself these terrible ideas is a developer who is not thinking out of the box.
If you look at the above system, you will see that anyone of any high level profession can use any droid.
The devs don't want novice CH's to have rancors, don't want novice marksmen to have flame throwers.
I want a droid that can take on a rancor.
There is just now way that there will not be some sort of gating.
The reason I like the above idea by the origonal poster is that it does indeed allow any high level character, be theya Chef / Droid Entineer / Master Artisan or a Bounty Hunter or even a Dancer / Tailor to use the high end droids that I think we all so want.
I once again point out that the devs gave ground on the NPC vendor issue - not because people said that they didn't want any additional fees (though many did) but because a viable solution for both players and the devs was found. In that case, as opposed to having a 3.2% day tax based upon the total value of the merchandice in the inventory, they went with a 200 cr fee and a 5% sales tax (this will probably be in the next big publish).
So, this is why I encourage us to look at solutions that allow a wide range of people to use any new high end combat droids, but at the same time, please the devs. If we just argue for no certs, we will wind up with something God-awful that we will all hate, and that will take months to get fixed.
