Thread: Droid Naming Revisited

I concur. As much as Archimedes, Bud, Galen, Gonk, Tonto, Closet, Killer, Fluffy, Dork, Dweeb, and Putz have helped me out, I sure wish naming them was as easy as coming up with the name.

I remember about a month ago I was charged with teaching a uber noob with the task of naming his droid. It took us a long time (groan).

C'mon SOE! RADIALS FOR DROID NAMES!

What I would like to see is droids called for the fist time get a random number generated for it, for example R5-X7. Then from the menu there should be two new commands, something like rename droid, and restore default name. It be nice for us to chose the numbers for ourselves, but I can see people abusing this(who wants to see a droid named A55-H013?)

I like this idea too, as droid "names" in Star Wars are nothing more than their own serial numbers. Since crafted items all have serial numbers already, you would think the default name could just be their serial, but it could be changed if desired.

Maybe that's a way to get numbers included withour having to rewrite the filter: let the default name be the droid's serial, and it can be changed (but with the current filters in place).

Maybe this was already brought up, but it's 6 AM and I haven't gone to bed yet

If the droid renaming thing is changed like your proposed, what kind of system would there be to prevent people from naming their MSE something like "R2-X3" or something like that? Their MSE isn't an R2 unit

Probably nothing, but I'd rather see mis-named MSEs and have have the ability to correctly name R2 than have neither.

AMIDALA: It is to be commended... what is its number?

The LITTLE BLUE DROID lets out a series of bleeps. CAPTAIN PANAKA leans
over and scrapes some dirt off of the side of the DROID and reads the
number:

CAPT. PANAKA: R2-D2, Your Highness.

Lest we forget some of the long-standing concerns of the droid maker (and owner) community in favor of system overhauls, I’d like to bring back discussion on a topic near and dear to me: droid naming.

We have come a long way since the days before Publish 8 and the many enhancements to our profession that came with it. One thing, however, that has not changed is the ability to name droids with numbers, and easily. EVERY DROID IN STAR WARS USES NUMBERS IN THEIR NAMES, and all of the NPC droids in SWG are named according to that standard as well. It just kills immersion for me and many others to see probots named “Fluffy” and such, and the best we can do to try to retain the convention is use an awkward handle like “ArthreeDeefive”.

The current system of naming droids using command changes has already shown to be flawed, as droids that receive their commands by voice (surgical, LE repair, protocol) cannot be renamed from their default. Even those that can be renamed are subject to a lengthy and somewhat confusing process of including the desired name in commands until it figures it out. That system makes since for pets, as living things do learn that way, but droids are assigned a number, and “remember” it through programming.

I think that a very workable solution to this problem lies in architecture already found in the game. The ability already exists to easily change the name of a datapad component using the radial menu: starships. If a way can be found to use that system on droids it would fix the long-standing talking droids name bug, give owners a way to use Star Wars-appropriate names for their droids, and make the whole system for droid naming much easier and more realistic for how droids should be named.

What do you all think? Any other suggestions or comments?

I what this fixed as well. I have been looking throu every SW Books I have just to name some of my Droids that I made for my self (Gate). I want the bug to be fixed so that if the names can include a defalt number like R2-D208 so that if the droid is ever messed up and switches for its given name at least people know that its a SW style number system. (X-Wing Series has some good droid names).

I would like to see a two tier name.

Top line would be a numeric designator unique to the driod. It woudl be assigned by the system or by the driod engineer at creation.

Second line could be programmed by the owner and would appear in parantheses below the unique designator and would be the driod's "nickname".

That, my friend, is an excellent idea!

Yeah, I was just reading the first droid issues threads from just after release, and it was one of the first items to be bugged. We were just sure that not being able to use #s in a droid name was a bug, and not as intended, and here we are in 2005 with the same boggling naming system in place. Sigh.
