Shian, this would be a perfectly acceptable argument if it weren't for the fact that you can master pretty much any non-hybrid combat profession on top of droid engineer (and artisan I believe). This game does not limit you to just one role. I decided a little while back that I wanted to try some combat, so I dropped doctor and picked up rifleman. Its not an either or choice, you can have both.

I know they are useful, I know how to cycle them, but dont ever think that I will be satisfied with the current performance of them..its just not good enough. Thats is why they do not sell except to new players who know no better and just 'fancy a droid'.

Once again, against the converted I say, there must be a middle ground where a Probot or its new incarnation can be a positive contributor to a group. It is horrible to be a handicap, tolerated at best.

The thing is supposed to fight a bit, used to be able to, got nerfed temporarily and never got un-nerfed. For heavens sake acknowledge that at the least.

I think this is a whole differen't argument. I'm still of the opinion that the probot shouldn't exist (not in its current capabilities at least). The only characters I believe should be able to control combat capable pets of any kind are creature handlers (or droid handlers if those had been implemented instead). But, taking into account that many people like having a combat pet to help them out, there are two arguments here, not sure exactly which one you're going for.

A. Probot should be a bit stronger. This would essentially be a widespread increase in combat capabilities, I'd say we need to see how things with the combat balance fall out before we go here.

B. Droid engineers should get a special combat droid (or special incarnation of the probot) that is stronger. This one I'm just opposed to in all forms. There's so much potential and diversity in droids, but if we start giving DE's special combat abilities (and even this small step with an enhanced probot is a large step in that direction) we start taking away from that potential piece by piece. You cannot give ability without taking it (or its potential) away.

I Dont want to upset Kollos and his monumental desire to be a 'pure crafter'..let that be so.

See, this is funny. That's not my desire, nor has it ever been my desire. You have evidently fallen victim to the incessant slandering that's been going on against me by the rabid hybrid wannabe camp. I'm not a "pure crafter" right now nor have I ever been- in addition to Master Artisan and Master Droid Engineer, I'm working my way up Rifleman. That "pure crafter" label has been applied to me by my opponents, and to some extent it is one that I accept and have used myself simply because it is easier than constantly having to fight it.

It seems to me that Jenden has always held roughly the same ideals that I have held. It's a bit disturbing that you (or anyone)would think we would "shoot down" this idea simply because neither of us has campaigned against combat droids themselves, just the idea of turning Droid Engineer into a combat (or combat related, if you prefer) profession. I try to make this point regularly, but somehow it must get lost in all the emotion.

There has only ever been one thing I have campaigned against, and will continue to campaign against, and that is turning Droid Engineer into a combat profession. I loosely define that as giving Droid Engineers some sort of combat ability that is not also given to other non-combat professions such as Weaponsmith and Armorsmith (to which we are forever tied due to our common pre-requisite: Engineering IV). We should remain a crafting profession, but that only means that we shouldn't have a combat advantage over other similar crafting professions.

I have always been in favor of adding more combat droids to the game as long as they are usable by as many people as possible. In other words, don't add new DE-only combat droids that are better than the ones that everyone else can use.

So in my eyes, what Virtanis is proposing isn't a compromise, it's just a wonderful idea that fits right in with what I have wanted all along.

Anyway, this is in no way meant to be a flame. I hope it just explains some of my frustration because I sometimes feel that people deliberately misinterpret what I am saying and what I am trying to accomplish (or protect if you prefer).

Simple argument here Jenden

The probot as it was was nerfed...because it was too 'uber' in terms of the creature abilities at the time,

The creature abilities changed,

The Probot was never changed to reflect this.

This is original design stuff.

Now, you reveal that you dont believe it should ever have existed..well to me that sums it up. A DE was always supposed to be a bit of a hybrid, but you prefer to deny our right to that because it doesnt suit your ideal, and meantime you crusade to get any and all combat abilities removed. The profession was designed hybrid, and then nerfed. Why do you and your like want to make us less than we already are?

I just cant ever convince you that at the very least we should have what we were always designed to have, a modest combat capability. Not Uber, just something workable, and more to the point sellable.

CL10 droids will sell no better than a probot..worse if they cannot have the standard craft/med modules.

I agree. The probot, or some other generally usable droid, should be better at combat than the current CL 10 Probot. It does seem rather silly that there isn't SOME sort of "bodyguard" droid in the game that can stand up to wild animals on the "civilized" planets. And to me, at least, that's the main issue. The current CL 10 Probot just isn't capable of serving as a bodyguard when you might get jumped by a pack of Tusk Cats with barely a split second's notice.

But to me, that need should be separated from the Droid Engineer profession. That need is no greater for us than it is for Weaponsmiths or Armorsmiths or Chefs or Tailors, which is why I want any new combat droids added to be usable by anyone. Or at the very least, any that are usable by Droid Engineers should also be usable by Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths and Chefs and Tailors. They need the same protection we need and have the same combat training - none.

So as long as you'll be happy "contributing" to a combat group the same way that the other crafting professions do, we're golden.

Do we have any real clues about the oft mentioned but rarely discussed combat revamp?

This is a sticking point between us. The old Probot does not in any way lend credence to the theory that Droid Engineer was meant to be a hybrid profession. Anyone could use the old Probot - Droid Engineers, Chefs, Pistoleers, Tailors... it didn't matter. We made the Probot, but we had no more ability to use the Probot than anyone else. So trying to argue that the Probot's combat ability belongs to Droid Engineers just doesn't work. That's like saying that Weaponsmiths were meant to be hybrids because they can make the LLC and Rocket Launcher.

I agree with you that the Probot was nerfed, supposedly temporarily, and then never re-instated to its former glory. And that situation should be rectified in some manner. But doing so isn't a fix to Droid Engineers, it's a fix to the combat system as a whole.

It seems to me that if you truly support Virantis's idea, than we may not be as far apart as you think.

I long ago gave up any thought of DE unique Combat Droids, the argument does't stand up to scrutiny.

As to DE being a combat profession, it always has been. Not at an Uber level, but simply because we have the ability to make Probots cheap for ourselves..it is true but possibly unpalatable that probots are disposables for us. We have always been Hybrid, just not to the same level as CH or Smuggler.

Al I really want out of this (as posted elsewhere) is to avoid the current situation where I am excluded from full groups cos I'm DE and contribute less, to avoid the silly Probot sucks comments, and to have something very very medium in a droid combat ability, but something above the rediculous level we can produce now.

We have stood still while Lair HP was increased, Specials were added all over the place, things generally moved on, yet our one Probot is just the nerfed baby it has always been.

We are not a hybrid in the true sense, nor do I want us to be, but we are 'hybrid'. jensen says elsewhere he wishes probot never existed for us. If it had not, the crafter only argument would be much stronger, but it did, and it does,,and because they are low cost disposables, that makes us Hybrid..like it or not

It's true that I was, but it doesnt change anything from my point of view.

Please, rid yourself of any notion that I support DE only droids..I dont.

However the fact remains that it takes so little to actually make a probot, that any self respecting DE has at least 3 of the devils in the datapad, and can make another in 5 minutes. How else to have them help out at the Emporor's retreat or jabbas Palace in repetitive missionusage?

As such, they are disposable to us, and so we are able to use them unflinchingly..it follows that unlike others who have to pay for them in hard credits, they are commonplace and cheap to us, and we are allowed by game rules to use them. Thus, by economic default, we are somewhat Hybrid.

Why does this concept not ring true to you?

And. as I said, it has been frozen in time. Other things moved on and the Probot is as it has been for an age. Simply put I want it brought into line. Not Uber, just functional in line with the new game.

Let me ask a question.

Would an ADV-Probot, Medium Armor, 40% resists, healable (with the new droid stim coming soon), loaded with two combat utility modules (like the ideas I posted above) bring a level of functionality you'd consider adequate?

Just curious, since we're getting a bit more specific here.

Consider myself ridded. Or something like that.

That clarifies what you mean much better, thank you.

It doesn't ring true to me, though, becausethe mild economic advantage you describeis something that involves game play, not game design. Besides, most established playershave enough money that 20k (or whatever) for a Probot is not a disincentive at all. (Virtually anyone can raise 20k in hour if they want to.) And since Probots can be reused over and over there's really no risk of losing your investment, so I personally wouldn't call them disposable in any sense.

Droid Engineers are not a hybrid due to the existence of the Probot because anyone can use it. Put another way, Probot usage is not restricted to the Droid Engineer profession, therefore the ability to use a Probot cannot provide something to the Droid Engineer profession that it does not also provide to any other profession.

Is Weaponsmith a hybrid? They can make grenades that anyone can use (albeit some better than others) and have the same economic advantage with grenades that Droid Engineers have with Probots.

And. as I said, it has been frozen in time. Other things moved on and the Probot is as it has been for an age. Simply put I want it brought into line. Not Uber, just functional in line with the new game.

Yup, I agree. They seem to have rebalanced just about everything else, but for some reason they forgot what should have been everyone's trusty sidekick. It really does make me wonder about the upcoming game-wide combat rebalance... is all combat going to be toned down a bit during that? If so, it would make some sense to me not to boost the Probot back up to its pre-nerf state if it were just going to get nerfed back down again during the rebalance. Not a lot of sense, mind you, because we have to suffer with a gimped Probot until the rebalance happens, but I can see the logic behind it.

Well... probably, at least for me. There are still a lot of variables involved, but the ability to heal the Probot with the new droid stim that's on the way is huge. Medium/40% armor is a lot stronger than most people seem to realize... if I could heal my Probot during combat it would be a lot more "powerful" than it is now even with no weapon upgrade.

A lot depends on what the new combat modules do. If we're still restricted to a mere 70-80 damage per shot, then the Probot is never going to be any good at killing things. That's not really a problem for me, though, but it might be for others. Kollos isalso a Riflemanand is perfectly capable of killing just about anything as long as I can keep his "tank" standing between him and his target long enough. What I'm hoping for from the new combat modules is the ability to change the way my Probot attacks - I'd like the option of a melee (Kinetic)module, or a Stun module, or a Cold module, etc, etc. A boost to maybe 90-100 damage would be nice as well, but for me isn't really necessary.

Well, Kollos pretty much summed up most of my answers to the rest of the replies but I think you missed my point on this one. I am against combat pets in general, be them droid or creature (faction NPC's are slightly different). When I said I wished the probot hadn't happened I was just giving one specific example. I don't like the idea of people having pets fighting for them, I think it takes away from some of the community aspect of the game (I would much rather go find a low-level combat person to help me with some creatures guarding my harvester than use a combat pet). This has nothing to do with DE or the probot in particular.

As for being a hybrid profession, if you're idea of hybrid is tha we can use the same droids everyone else can then I'm all for hybrid. Its when we can use the droids and not everyone else can (such as certing combat droids to squad leaders and DE's, I would have a problem with this) that I have a problem with it.
