Ready for a "Doughbacca-style breakdown(tm)"??

I thought you might be...

Here we goo...

So, a DE creates a basic droid with optional attachments. Then, it is sold. As the master uses it, the Droid has its own Skill Tree that it can enhance, from which the skills when it levels is chosen by the master.

This is interesting. Giving a skill tree (with points to spend) to a "pet"? I think that's new.

Will the droid be able to unlock its FS slot?

Say maybe speed upgrades on the weapons, AI upgrades, More Time per Baterry, etc... You could even make this better by adding the option to swap out Weapon Attachments. Say you start with a Droideka having standard Blasters on each arm. Well, after it gets to a certain level, or at certain points in its skill tree you can have a DE swap the weapons out for rifle attachments, automatic blasters, cannons, lasers, acid based weapons, rockets, etc.... Perhaps make these weapons vunerable to decay.

Well...this is sounding pretty good, in theory. I do dig the "upgrades" thing. The ability upgrade and 'mod' a droid (after its creation) is something that I know a lot of DEs pine for...

It makes a lot of sense to do this.

Of course...it might also kill our sales of new droids but that can be addressed, I guess.

I think that would be just the peachiest thing. It would be good if each type of droid had its own specific type weapons it could use. Maybe many of them are the same as other droids, but at least 1 or 2 that are specific to each model.

This is starting to sound like a TON of work, to be honest.

It's a great idea, so far. I just fear that the amount of coding to make this a reality would be unworkable, considering the other profession work that's needed, bug fixes, GCW work, work on the Space Expansion, etc.

Still....this has 'legs' (to me), thus far.

One aspect that I very much like to this idea is that it allows an owner a greater deal of customization (after the initial build). I believe this will make droids more like the cherished, semi-autonomous entities that we'd like them to be.

The good thing about this is it keeps a Droid Engineer in his profession. More than just selling the original Droid, as with vehicles, you have to upkeep it, progress it.

This is a bit like that game Japanese girls play...where they have to "care for" their little electronic pet...

Oh...wait.

Droids in Star Wars movies have Artificial Intelligence. They can not do something if they don't know how, so they have to learn it. That is my idea here. Allow them to learn and grow as an independent sentient entity.

Read: Tons of work.

It's a great idea, in theory. I think we need to hear back from the team on how feasible this kind of concept is in the short and long term. It sounds to me like it would be very cool in the long term but it would likely take a LONG time to get to this point.

Is this concept only to be for combat roles?

If not, it might be a good idea to explore in terms of setting up the "skill" tree that it could learn.

Tree 1: Combat skills
Tree 2: Crafting skills
Tree 3: Healing skills
Tree 4: Entertainment skills

That's how I'd see the skill trees breaking down.

When it got to its Master box, it would self-destruct and...oh...no, nevermind.

At the Master level...how about it gets some enhanced AI code/scripting tossed in?

Now THAT would make this VERY worthwhile, indeed.

How do you guys feel about something like this?

Thunderheart, Anything but a DH class.... please. Options are out there, ideas have been made and said. Please, please make every effort to avert a DH profession!

Im reading and gathering all of the ideas put forth and presenting them to the devs. Keep in mind that a bunch of the proposals put forth the idea of a "mini profession" or adding a droid handling tree to the DE profession which is basically what's on the table.

The important thing to remember is that any proposal has to include the following design criteria if they are going to be considered by the devs:

  • Any player can handle any pet or droid as long as its CL 10 or below.
  • Any pet/droid above level 10 has to have a significant skill point/experience point expenditure.
    • Reference CH's and the fact they have to spend points for an entire profession to get those benefits.
    • Factions pets (which could be some droids) will be added at a later date.

Keep proposing good ideas and Drashk and I will keep looking for things that the devs and community can agree on.

A pet skill tree inside the Droid Engineering profession is something I can live with. Like the original poster said, "Anything but a droid handling profession".

This is an amazing Idea, I have had thoughts along the same line, but I'm usually too softspoken to get my Ideas out there.

Thanks Barfalomue

No, thank you. I am glad people are in favor of this idea. I sure think it beats the HECK outta making DE into DH or making a DH a separate skill tree.

Honestly, when you look at it from a programmers perspective, this is basically a DH suggestion. Making a seperate "profession" that requires skill points in order to use higher level combat droids. But its a DH suggestion that is wrapped in a nice package with icing on it It just feels right and not like a CH clone. And in the future this could be used as a foundation to adding more functionality to utility droids.
