Just a note from a droid consumer here. If my droids were to decay I would simply stop using them. Therefore I would never need a replacement.
What is needed are droids that are far more useful to the average player. Droids needs to be tougher in combat. Droids need to be ableto store more than 10items.The ability to call two droids at once would be a big plus as well.
DE does need a revamp to increase sales. Making droids rot like vehicle customization kits is not the answer.
Besides... look how long R2D2 and C3PO lasted in the movies...

I think its fair to say that we do want a way to make money but I'm coming down against the decay method. Its not the way I see droids. R2 made it through 40+ years of getting the blown to bits all too often. Droids should not decay.
But droid parts, those guys should get blown away left and right. And we should replace them. I've just been peeking at the descriptions of the shipwright profession and thats what we should get.
Once we sell someone their dream droid and it should be eternal. The chassis anyway. Everything else should have some massive HAM score that is slowly whittled away as the droid is damaged. Most modules should last 2-3 months for normal activity, forever if they dont get shot at. Furthermore if a droid is incapped one module, starting with the misc, then armor, then combat, then vital part(brain, sensor, modivator), is destroyed. Once something is destroyed, or the customer just wants to switch modules, he comes to us and we sell and install the new part.
To make things short lets make our technologically based droids just like the "really cool" spaceships they've been telling us about and less like creatures. Thats always how I've pictured this profession. Lets back JTL to the hilt and see if we can't get a little of that JTL love for ourselves.

Personally I'm in favour of droids suffering from "component" decay rather than decaying as a whole...as Rhitan said, they seem to be going to handle ships like that, so why not droids?
PS Just gone through the thread again, and I have to agree with another comment I saw, baically droids need to be more useful before a decay system is implemented, otherwisepeople just won't bother with them....
