Thread: Continuity Comes First

I'm a former Master DE (sig doesn't show it)... so I thought I'd post my thoughts on recent suggested changes:

It's like this: The economy is nearly 100% combat oriented. Demand is applied to a good or service based on it's usefulness in combat. Right now, for DE's the market is limited. Any droid with a 110 medical capability rating tends to sell well, but when you think about it.. they're getting used by doctors for buffing and healing. So my first comment still applies. Then, of course, you have the smaller market for droids with various crafting stations in them.

What's left, of course.. is the combat droids. Right now, we've got probots.. and that's about it. Recent discussions have indicated that people want more combat droids.

I understand the reason.. (see first paragraph) however, this doesn't mean we can excuse the continuity. Plain and simple: It's against the law to manufacture combat droids. After the clone wars, Palpatine outlawed it. I'm not saying I have any suggestions as how to make non-combatant droid more in demand. I'm just stating a fact.

And... beyond that: Droidekas should not be added to the game. It's fine that Nym has some old broken down ones.. but they should not be manufactured by DEs.

Flame all ya want.. one star me. But the continuity should come first.

Continuity eh? The Republic outlawed droid armies after the debacle on Naboo in Ep. 1, but the Republic isn't in control anymore and their laws are invalid.

Palpatine himself has an army of droids (Dark Troopers) that he used shortly after the Battle of Yavin. The very same time frame this game is set in. And dark troopers are already in the game asa faction pet.

High powered combat droids do have a place in this game, and in the continuity of Star Wars.

This is beside the fact, but a lot of this game doesn't follow continuity anyway, so I don't know if a continuity argument is even valid at this point.

So make combat droids illegal. Who cares? We'll hide them from the Empire -- its perfect.

Agreed. And with all due respect to the original poster - who in principle should be correct - in the case of SWG precedent has not only been set but mandated that gameplay considerations take precedence over continuity.

The moment they decided to make cloning one of the core systems of SWG (when cloning is not only outlawed but technologically different than presented in the game) they made this clear. It has also beenconfirmed by"Red Names" that this is indeed the case; continuity is a concern only after all other gameplay concerns are met.

An example of this is the speederbike/swoop change - on test, the speederbike was the faster of the two, and when it was pointed out that this challenged continuity it was changed. However, this did not change the gameplay mechanic, simply the graphic which appears under you.

In the case of combat droids, they have sort of painted themselves into a corner. They have set the precedence for pets, and creature pets outnumber droids 10-1. It's more in continuity in terms of "star warsy" enviornment for the game as opposed to the rule in some EU that droids were outlawed (Episode III information non-withstanding). In other words, it's better to have droids hanging around as opposed to creatures - one is certainly more "Star Warsy" than the other.

In no part of this game does continuity come first, so I fail to see why changes to Droid Engineering should follow this rule.

You play a MMORPG loosly based on the Star Wars Universe. You are not playing the movies.

The devs should stop treating the continuity as an obsticle to gameplay, and start using it as a set of rules for how things should be.

I agree they've been violating the continuity on many things. It should stop though.. and we shouldn't encourage a change that would propetuate their current design philosophy.

None of your points are valid. Combat droids are not illegal. Put that on top of what Audio said, and there is nothing wrong with adding higher powered combat droid pets to the game.

Continuity doesnt count for crap in this game, it never has, and it never will.

If you want continuity, lets-

-Stop people from having rancors follow them around in theed.

- Take jedi slots away from those who have gotten them

- Institute perma death (who comes back to life in SW? not people like us!)

-Get rid of all the crafters, since in SW just about everything was manufactured by corporations

- Make it take days to travel from planet to planet

- Put those character who violate law in prison, for life

(remember! these are just EXAMPLES. not being literal here)

Continuity doesnt mean anything in this game, it never has, and it never will. Get over it.

Sometimes Continuity must give way for game play. Arguing pure continuity is a loosing position unless you are willing to delete your character the first time you die (since cloning centers, as exists in SWG are almost completely out of Continuity)

Besides, George Lucas can't even spell Continuity.

But I LIKE continuity!

- Account: Master TKA (cancelled)
- Account: Master Doctor (cancelled)
- Account: Smuggler (cancelled)
- Account: Master Chef (cancelled)
- Account: Master Droid Engineer (activity suspended pending developments)
Total loss of annual revenue (SOE): ~$715US to ~$900US
- Bad press: Priceless
Should Sony and Lucas Arts be worried? (15000 users * 5 accts = ~$13MIL in potential lost gross annual revenue) If I were the CEO for either LA or SOE, I would certainly be worried.

Well. Being a M DE, I would like to see droidika in the game.. (mind you I am not one of those combat fanatics) BUT I high doubt they will ever be in the game.. from the stand point that the devs dont want to 'unbalance' the game by giveing real combat droids to DE's.. and the droidika is the type of droid that makes even jedi run.. so not even a BH or CH etc etc would even stand a chance against a Droidika. the Idea is there to have one.. BUT then there is that 'unbalance' as the devs call it to no give it to us.

I see the DE class just running around in circles.

At the risk of sounding like a well worn record, NOBODY is proposing that Combat Droids be given to DE ONLY

Whether its the actual Droideka, or some other form of Combat Droid, you are wrong to assume the Devs have no wish or intention to put them in game...they have done most of the work on that already in preparation for what was going to be Droid Commander. They clearly can and do accept Combat Droids will be in game ..sometime.. at a level higher than we presently have.

As for continuity, that went out of the window long long ago as any sort of development driver in this game. You only have to look around you anytime and place to see that.
