Thread: So data modules will finally have a use...

I just want to point out one thing that nobody else has mentioned:

As a purely semantic point: a"data module" is not necessarily a "datapad". Even though they sound very similar I would not assume the two are the one and the same unless somebody with knowledgetells you unequivocally that they are. That little point makes the statement "it must have a datapad" pretty meaningless and useless to us as a piece of information. None of us can know for certain what "has a datapad" actually means. We can only speculate, unfortunately.

I'm fairly certain that when you have a droid with a data storage module in it, the radial dial say's "Open droids datapad"

you are right about that. I still wouldn't assume that this is what the developer was referring to. It may have been, but it may not have been. Like TK said, we were told to stock up on probot's prior to one of the droid publishes. They forgot to mention that what the really meant was probot chassisrather thanprobots. Big difference.

For all we know there is a new shipwright craftable component coming called "starship interface datapad" or something that when placed in a droid gives it the ability to accept commands from a pilot, and this is what the developer was talking about when he said "datapad".

There is no way for us to know.

What made me assume it was the data storage module was the fact that the dev mentioned any droids you had now with a datapad could be used... and data storage is the only datapad you could have right now.

I understand, but it doesn't read to me like he was necessarily saying that existing droids with datapads can be used because they have datapads, but maybe I missed something.

another possibility, if we was saying existing droids can be used, is that all droids will automatically gain the ability to have a pilot "bind" their datapad with the droid, and that he didn't really mean "the droid needs to have a datapad", but instead meant "the pilot has to bind his pilot skills to a droid which will then give the droid a new "pilot command menu" that is accessiblefrom the pilot's datapad". /shrug.

Getting caught up in semantics is exactly the thing you shouldn't be doing Malitevv. The people who know can't confirm or deny, but I really doubt its as complicated as the tailchasing is making it. Think of the speaker, think of the question asked. Are you really going to look for hidden meaning in a statement made by someone who probably doesnt work and build droids every day? Or just take the simple read and assume he meant data module? I vote for B.

Besides, one thing we have been begging for for a long time is that Data Modules gain some form of use. I am an optimist and think that they actually listened.

I'm not getting caught up in semantics dude. I'm pointing out that things don't necessarily mean what they seem, and assuming that you do know what they mean and then doing factory runs of otherwise useless modules because of it would be quite foolish. I am simply warning that taking extraordinary measures like that based on such a small and vague piece of information is probably not a good idea.

Taking vague statements at face value is the thing you don't want to do. I consider it important to remind everyone that they are vague, unclear, and largely useless as a guide.

You can craft a 1000 data modules if you want to, but given the rare resources required to make them, and given that fact that the one person who does know has posted to this thread multiple times that the developer did not explain it correctly, I would strongly advise against doing factory runs of those otherwise useless modules.

"deception" is a poor choice of words. No one who knows what is going on in JTL beta is deceiving you, they are making it abundantly clear that they are bound by legal agreement to remain silent on anything they see or do in the beta test, until it is disclosed publicly by SOE itself. Everything a beta tester "knows" is subject to change, and if you were told how things stand now, and they varied significantly upon release, how would you feel then? Deceived? Really, we should be getting excited about JTL, but realize the beta agreement is best for everyone, since it lets the Devs and Testers make a better game with a clear field.

Well, maybe deception was the wrong word. It's just the feeling of, " Haha, i know a secret, and i'm not gonna tell you...nanananananana.." Maybe this anger just stems from the fact that i didn't get accepted into the JTLS Beta. I understand completely the need, and reason for an NDA to keep the info at bay. The wrong info gets out, people believe it to be truth, game ships, and nothing is what you thought. Game gets hated, people uprise...bleah bleah bleah.

I am excited about the expansion though. I mean, this is StarWars. Have we yet had a war amongst the stars?

I know what you mean. Most of the people don't bother me, its the ones (mostly on the Tarquinas board) that sit there and complain about the bugs.... BETA test is not just their private game preview, its supposed to be buggy, if it weren't they wouldn't need to invite anyone now would they.... I swear, the one time I've been randomly picked for anything, I had to be present to win (which I wasn't since I never win random drawings).

Sorry, but that's a point you utterly failed to make. You never mentioned making or not making modules, and in each post after your initial one on the difference between Data Module and datapad, you were coming up with things he could have meant instead. If this was your point, it got lost in your examples. No offense implied or intended.

All this i can't talk about it crap that's going on has me in two different states of feeling

1. I am getting excited, and can't wait until the expansion arrives.

2. I am getting angry with all the deception going on, and i just wanna kidnap someone who knows, and torture them until they tell.
