Here's some stuff for you devs and DEs to chew the fat on, regarding the issues of:

A.) What should droids do?

B.) Whatdroids would you like to see (and more importantly - build and sell) in SWG?

Astromech Droids: Ship/Vehicle Repair and Slicing

P2 Droid: One of the earliest astromech droid models, lacked "droidspeak" (R2's beeping language)

R1 Droid: The first astromech model capable of programming hyperdrive jumps, had poor mobility due to single treaded unipod usd for locomotion

R2 Droid: The standard astromech droid

R3 Droid: The new and improved model.

R4 Droid: Designed to repair ground vehicles and speeders, not used for spaceships, as its memory could only store one hyperdrive jump

R5 Droid: A very cheap and error-prone "upgrade" of the R4.

Protocol Droids

3P0 Droid: used primarily as translators and representatives in official diplomatic situations where etiquette and savoire-faire is important

M-3P0 Droid: a military version of the standard 3P0 droid, designed to be a "walking field manual" on all things military, from proper medal ceremony behavior, to the imperial military code of conduct, to weapons and tactics reference

3D-4X Administrative Droid: designed for secretarial and day-to-day office administrative tasks, with "specialized" models upgraded to perform corporate surveillance/espionage and even as back-up security (with a pop-out thigh compartment holstering a blaster pistol).

PD Lurrian Protocol Droid: a standard 3P0 model with an upgraded body and head design

LOM Protocol Droid: a rival droid model to the 3P0 line, but with sometimes ineffective behavioral inhibitors (the bounty hunter 4-LOM from ESB was a malfunctioning LOM Protocol droid)

Medical Droids

2-1B Surgical Droid: a self-functioning medical droid with skills and built-in tools that make it more effective than the best humanoid surgeons

MD Medical Specialist: several sub-models exist

  • MD O: diagnostics

  • MD 1: lab technician

  • MD 2: anesthesiologists

  • MD 3: pharmacists

  • MD 4: microsurgery (less effective than a 2-1B, though)

FX Medical Assistant: nursing assistant and first aid treatment

Household Service

TDL Nanny Droid: a feminine, four-armed droid designed to raise children (a very expensive, live-in babysitter)

Model E: little droids designed to act as playmates for children

Guardian Droid: a robot dog specializing in household patrol and defense

JV-Z1/D: butler droid

U2C1 Housekeeping Droid: designed for every cleaning task from vaccuming to stripping paint

SE4 Servant Droid: a combination protocol/butler/handyman droid (personality-wise, they make 3P0s look "relaxed")

R-10 Household Droid: a mobile wet bar and bartender all-in-one

TT-8L: home surveillance and threat scanning droid (it's the same kind of droid that was in Jabba's door in RotJ)

Commercial Service

Automated Sabacc Dealer: self-explanatory

Robo-Bartender: automated drink mixer

WA-7: moves via a single treaded roller, designed for use as a waitress (AotC)

Business

SCM-22 Stenographer: an AI-controlled recording device and dictation machine (fits in the palm of the hand)

CZ Secretary/Comm Droid: designed for light secretarial and file management, as well as courier duty (the information it carries can only beretrieved with a password, which makes slicing these droids for their stored memory extremely difficult)

TT-40 Library Droid: a hovering librarian which knows not only where every datafile in its library is located, but also the contents of each from start to finish

Memory Droid: designed to be a mobile computer database, which prevents the need for erasing databases in cases where a quick exit is required

Heavy Industrial

EVS Construction Droid: a gigantic droid (about twice the size of an AT-AT) with full dig, construction, and demolition capabilities to match that of a large construction firm of humanoid workers

GRZ-6B Wrecker Droid: a droid about the size of a rancor, designed to "eat" demolition debris

FLR Logger:a robotlumberjack equipped with built-in power chainsaws and wood-chipper

LIN Demolitionmech: a mine-laying droid

8D8 Smelting Operator: designed for assembly-line work and have extra-protection against fire and high temperatures, their personalities are usually ill-tempered and they are jealous of other droid models (Jabba's "torture droid" was a re-programmed 8D8)

11-17 Miner Droid: a small, AI-controlled, mobilemining drill

Agricultural

CD-2 Harvester: a farming droid about the size of an AT-AT designed to till and plant large acres

Pit Droid: a small, cheap, stupid droid capable of performing minor repairs and lifting and moving heavy cargo (featured in Watto's Junk Shop in TPM)

Maintenance

Imperial City Maintenance Droid (IC-M): designed for simple mechanical and electrical repairs of public utilities and pest control

MN-2E General Maintenance Droid: originally designed to clean and perform minor upkeep to the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, with built-in repulsorlift, vibro-sheers, buffer, garbage disposal unit, cleaning fluid sprayers, and manipulator arms

EG-6 Power Droid: walking battery

Repair

WED Treadwell: designed for mechanical and electrical repair

RA-7 "Death Star Droid": designed to beadministrative droids for high-ranking imperial officers, they are actually fitted with a secret memory storage databank that is routinely downloaded to ISB's (Imperial Security Beureau) central computers because their REAL job is to spy on the officers they were "rewarded" to

Military

Basilisk War Droid: a giant (twice the size of a dewback), flying, mechanical "bug" that was designed to be a combination war mount for the now-extinct Mandalorians and a flying weapons platform, armed with 2 laser cannons, 2 missile launchers, shockwave generators, and two heavy battle claws

Xim's War-Robot: an ancient design, though still an effective combat droid by modern standards, they are bipedal, ten feet tall, and armed with heavy armor plating and two wrist-mounted pulse cannons, limited intelligence and interface, controllable only by verbal commands from specially-designed transmission horns (and the droids lacked voice-recognition software, so ANYBODY who got "on the horn" could order them to do anything they wanted them to)

Krath War Droid: designed by the Krath, a cult ofpracticioners of the ways of the Sith (though technically, they were NOT sith), these droids are bipedal and armed with a short sword in one handand a short range pulse "bow" in the other (fitted with spikes on each end of the bow to allow use in melee thrusts), their intelligence is more animal-like and vicious, and their programming is limited to performing fast-charging attack strikes and they cannot be ordered to stop until they or their target is dead, though they are smart enough to always try to eliminate the greatest threat first

Imperial Dark Trooper Phase I: a towering "endoskeleton" armed with a wrist-mounted fighting blade on one arm and a blast shield in the other.

Imperial Dark Trooper Phase II: (the currently-available imperial faction "pet" in SWG) resembling a "giant stormtrooper", these are fitted with low-velocity repulsorlifts for increased mobility, blast-resistant armor plating, and use an assault cannon that fires both plasma shells and long-range high-explosive rockets

Imperial Dark Trooper Phase III: a black-armored, larger version of the IDT Phase II, with more powerful repulsorlifts, jet pack, and shoulder-mounted tubes that fire heat seeking "seeker missiles"that can obliterate the strongest personal deflector shields; can act as an independent droid unit or as an exoskeleton for a human operator

Arakyd Probot: a combination deep space probe, reconnaissance, and combat support droid, armed with a light blaster cannon

Fromm Tower Droid: a 12' tall "tower" on 6 all-terrain wheels equipped with a 360-degree rotating sensor array, forward and aft light laser cannons, and repulsor ball launchers (they launch small, spheroid, anti-grav explosives that are remote-flown by the Tower Droid and detonated when near hostiles)

Trade Federation Battle Droid: command and security models are designed to think and function independent of a central control computer (CCC), while battle models deactivate when they lose contact with the transmitted signal from the CCC. They are typically armed with blaster carbines, though they can also operate any heavy weapons and combat vehicles they are pre-programmed to (TPM, AotC)

Trade Federation Super Battle Droid: capable of acting independent of a CCC,it has improved armor plating, strength, and built-in, wrist-mounted double-blaster cannons (AotC)

Trade Federation Droideka (Destroyer Droid): these insectoid-like droids can roll into battle quickly on their armored "shell" and then extend their locomotive claws and two arms equipped with double-blaster cannons, and they are protected by a high-rating personal defense shield that can be maintained even while they are firing at opponents (TPM, AotC)

Commerce Guild Dwarf Spider Droid: this short, four-legged warbot is armed with a powerful laser cannon in its rotating head (AotC)

Commerce Guild Homing Spider Droid: a towering, four-leggeddroid designed for anti-vehicular missions, it is armed with a laser dish capable of firing a sustained beam to slice and dice enemy armor (AotC)

InterGalactic Banking Clan Hailfire Droid: self-aware, mobile missile platform that moves on two giant, hoop-like, treadedwheels and is armed with 2 15-round Hailfire Missile packs (AotC)

Assassins

ASN-121: a droid designed to be easily modified and retro-fitted to fulfill a variety ofmission profiles, it has a high-speed repulsor-lift, various drills and cutters, and can be fitted with a harpoon gun, sniper blaster, spy sensors, or a flamethrower, and also it's forward tube can be modified to carry poison gas sprayers, messages, or even venomousanimals (it's the droid Zam Wessel used to insert the kouhun bugs intoAmidala's apartmentin AotC)

IG Assassin Droid: Only 5 of these in existence; there are4 of these with the same programmed consciousness, IG-88, IG-88B, IG-88C, and IG-88D. The fifth IG droid, IG-72, has its own seperate consciousness.

E522 Assassin Droid: designed for terminating Emperor Palpatine's harshest critics, it's a hulking hunchback on treads (looks similar to the T-1s from T3, oddly enough), armed with a neurotoxin needle launcher, ion cannon, heavy repeating blaster, and a hunter-seeker projectile cannon

Scarab Droid: a palm-sized, bug-like droid armed with poisonous injector "fangs"

DZ-70 Fugitive Tracker Droid: a floating sphere of sensor arrays, multi-channel antennae and armed with a light laser cannon and a stun blaster

Training/Gladiatorial

HT Drone: a complementary unit that is controlled by an RHTC-560, this squat little droid performs tracking and reconnaissance duty for its master unit, andis armed with a stun blaster and repulsorlifts used to defend itself and evade attacks by rodian survivalist students

Duelist Elite: a droid designed to train melee weapons specialists, it has attachable weapons sockets in its wrists to mount a variety of melee weapons, as well as a state-of-the-art cognitive matrix that allows it to study its opponents' fighting styles and exploit any weaknesses. As well as the natural risk of injury and even death from training with these droids, it's not unheard of where an assassin would modify one's programming to make it "accidentally" kill their master

Mark X Executioner: designed strictly for galdiatorial combat entertainment, this droid has a humanoid-shaped, armored chassis mounted on two tank treads and instead of arms, has 2 rotating, shoulder-mountedweapons arrays that have a variety of both ranged and melee weapons rigged to them, including a force pike, flechette launcher, blaster cannon, sonic cannon, vibro-saw blades, and vibro-blade

Security

G-2RD Guard: a small, floating, spherical droid equipped with a variety of sensors and a light blaster cannon

501-Z Police Droid: a large, crimson, bipedal droid designed for law enforcement, fugitive tracking, and security patrol, it is equipped with shock-resistant plating but is not blaster-proof. Armed with a stun stick and/or low power stun blaster

Hound-W2 SPD: a small, squat, scanning patrol droid, with state-of-the-art sensor arrays and thermoptics

Imperial Mark IV Sentry Droid: a small, high-speed, hovering patrol droid armed with a variety of sensors, optical arrays, and image transmission equipment (seen frequently in Mos Eisly in ANH Special Edition)

Interrogation

IT-O Interrogator: the Empire's favorite tool of torture, this black, repulsorlift-driven orb has a "truth serum" syringe (which can be filled with a variety of drugs, poisons, and even acid), a sonic torture device, an electroshock prod, and a grasping claw, as well as health monitoring devices to make sure no rebel dies too soon into the interrogation process

EV Supervisor Droid: originally designed to be an admnistrative droid in industrial corporations, a foul-up in their personality programming matrices made them sadistic and cruel, which resulted in their being sold on the black market as interrogators, whose servogrip "clamp" hands made perfect torture devices(Jabba the Hutt's mean droid that bossed around R2 in RotJ is an EV)

Espionage

ISB Moon Moth: a small droid designed to look like a real moth, it is equipped with both visual and auditory recorder/transmitters and can follow only simple verbal commands however, it is equipped with a tiny amount of detonite which can be exploded via remote control in case rebels try to capture and inspect the moth

Fly Eye: a small, self-aware, flying spy camera

RM2020: a hovering, 4' long droid designed for battlefield reconnaissance and sabotage, it is equipped with transmitters, visual and audio recording devices, 4 manipulator arms coming out of the bottom of its trunk, and armed with an energy cannon on arm and a wide-dispersal, short-rangeion cannon on the other

Slicer Droids: coming in a variety of styles, intelligence levels, and slicing capability, these droids are used to slice terminals, security panels, doors, computer systems, and vehicles, as well as implanting computer viruses

Positronic Processors: these small, hovering, box-like slicer droids specialize in taking over the central processing unit ofcomputer systems

Human Replica Droid: designed to look, feel, and act like humans (or humanoids) while carrying out gray and black ops for their masters, or acting as bodyguards or assassins with better-than-human strength and intelligence

I just hope that for one, someone of the dev-team hops in here and accidently sees this post...

AND READS IT! ....

But we know that'll never happen. They don't come here due to our "Anti-dev"-force field which seems to surround the Droid engineer board.

Absolutely Fantastic post, great research and well thought out. I can only wish that SoE would even consider a remote few of the droids on this list. No, Droid Engineer's are not "factories" able to produce masses of droids...but a master of his profession should be able to work long enough to produce things that they need...any of the droids on that list, I'd wager.

Glad you guys liked it. What I'd like to discuss is, what droids should make the cut into SWG and then, what would they do in-game-wise and how would they be implemented?

For example, should Dark Trooper Phase III be included as a faction pet on the perk list, or as a DE-craftable-only droid made by imperial faction DEs?

Or and MD-O droid, since it specializes in diagnostics, should it temporarily increase the Diagnostics skill level of the medic using one?

Should the rebellion get one of those nifty commerce guild war droids on their faction pet list as the answer to the imperial AT-ST?

You know, let's brainstorm this stuff and play "SWG DE Developer".

Just no Nanny Droid!

I really, really want to see more disposable combat droids. I think that a Battle Droid would be a cool thing to implement. A Cheap, One hit - Incap droid with a pretty good attack and damage.

Of course, you would have to have more than one out at a time, but that's another issue altogether.

One-hit incap? Stormtroopers aren't 1-hit incap like they were in the movies, so why should battle droids be?

But I like the angle you're going on with the TFBD's - not so tough, but a cheap and easy to manufacture, quick-and-dirty combat support pet.

some of the ideas listed, ie: robo bartender, reminded me of something else - several droid types should work as mini factories.

You would set them up in your home/store/cantina, stock them with components, and insert schematics, like you would a factory. Only instead of punching out a run until the schematic is used up or they run out of ingreadients, they would create items "on order". So your bartender droid would display a "menu list" showing one listing for each item available (instead of showing 30 coff33b33rs, and 20 Hoth Ices). Each item would be created when another player selects to buy it off your droid, on the spot. This would differentiate player-crafted droids from structure-created vendors, since vendors would just take stacks of stocked items, and droids take schematics. Kind of rounds out the vendor market nicely, too....and with all the focus on interdependence, it's about time merchants were able to buy vendors from droid engineers.....

To work out the system a little further, you could have different droid models that are capable of using only certain types of schematics...so the bartender, for an easy example, could only take drink schematics...

Well I could see a recon droid for surveyors/miners that works much in the same way as seeker droids for BHs...it has a certain number of charges...like 5 and you send it on its way you Pick a resource Name (from currently available list of resources) and a direction and within say 1000m or 1500m it will give you the highest concentration it found as a waypoint and be spent...

Theres also alot of droid info in the old west end games Star Wars roleplay, and as such some of it is more 'SWG friendly' than what is essentially a film sourcebook

The thing you get from RP material which you dont really get from film referencebooks are the customisations etc on specific droids which are the kind of things that give good ideas for droids in SWG

I think just for the heck of it, we should go down the list and "SWGize" each droid. If nobody else does, I will later today or tomorrow.
