Thread: Combat Driods DH, Certs and whatnot

Yeah, yeah .. I'm a board newb. Normally I'm a lurker, and this'll be my first actual post. I've been skimming the DE boards for the past month now. I started when I finally looked at the DE tree in-game and, well, it looked interesting. So I decided to lurk here and see what's up. All I can say is ... ick. I honestly don't mean any offence, but your profession seems to be a mess. I do have to say I agree with the DEVs concentrating on low CL Combat Droids and Utility Driods right now, though. People really seem to want Combat Driods and, well, it would make sense to go ahead and fix what's already there before moving on tothe more advanced things.

I don't know if the idea has already been suggested (I'm having a bit of a time finding all the information. It seems spread out, and your board isn't set up like the other Prof boards I visit. Still adjusting), but I do have an idea in regards to Combat Driods above CL 10. A bit of a compromise between the DH and the Cert systems that have been suggested.

It just seems the DEVs won't be giving out greater than CL10 Droids unless there's a cost on the part of the players using them by way of Exp and SP. I was thinking: Why not go ahead and give DEs the Certs to use them as they're able to craft them? In order for other people to use the Droids, DEs could (perhaps for a moderate price) be able to train players in the use of the Droid (at an Xp cost from one of the player's skill trees and a pre-determined SP cost, both of which would rise as the CL become greater). DEs would have their CL +10 Combat Driods and players would have them as well (depending on how many skills they would be willing to sacrafice).

It seems to sound practical, though. The one who makes the droids would know how to use them best and he could train other people how to use them, keep them in shape, etc.

As I said before, this might have already been suggested. It isn't very fleshed out, and I'm sure it's full of holes. That's why I'm posting it here. You guys know the system better than I do. You know how viable it might be.

All I ask is you be gentle for the newb. =)

The idea of attaching the skill point and xp need to a droid itself has been mentioned before. As far as i remember, it has gotten no overwhelming response andithink there would be no chance of implementing it without rearranging the CH pets aswell. Still, it is one of the better ideas floating around here.

Edit- Having re-read what's been proposed a few times, I'm removing what i said previously, Sorry

This is a good idea, let's keep expanding on it and working out any problems that we find

This is interesting, though. If you used the same methodology for the Droid Engineer profession as well, these certs could be layered onto the existing profession just like they're being layered onto others as well.

In order to "buy" these certs, you'd have to spend X experience from whatever tree they're layered into. Existing characters would still have to buy the certs to use them, and they'd still use the same experience as before (they just probably already have a ton of it saved up).

This could work, and since it can be applied to all professions it wouldn't give a combat advantage to Droid Engineers specifically.

You could take this a step further, too, and have these in-profession Certs also cost additional skill points. That would cover all of the Devs' concerns (at least that they've told us about). Plus these "skill point certs" could still be put into any profession that the Devs deemed appropriate, and even better they could cost more (or less) for different professions in order to correctly balance the additional functionality for each profession individually.

So, for instance, you could give all crafters (Chef, Droid Engineer, Armorsmith) a "skill point cert" for slightly souped-up Probot at level 4 of any tree for a cost of 4 skill points and 75k XPs. (Random numbers, just an example.) Then if the Devs think it wouldn't be wise to give that same souped-up Probot to Combat professions for balance reasons, they could still add the cert to them but charge 6 skill points and 150k XPs. They could add a second super-duper Probot at Master level for 8 skill points and 130k XPs. Or whatever.

Really flexible, too. Specialty droids could be "skill point certed" into the appropriate professions but not into others, or into others at a dramatically higher cost. Anyone could use an Entertainer Droid, for example, but it might cost an Entertainer 3 skill points at any level 4 box while it costs everyone else 10 skill points at Master only.

This is pretty cool... great idea Imare!

Woohoo! Thanks for the feedpack guys. I'm glad it seems I wasn't totally off base with that idea. =)

In retrospect, it probably would make senseto apply such a system to the CH tree as well. I don't know if the CHs would appreciate thier system being tampered with any further though, let alone players in general to such an overhaul. In regards to Kollo's example (and I know it was just random numbers=)), I think the cost should be fairly high. Not exorbitant, but I think the XP part of it should be a sacrifice. I would definitely like a Skill Point cost as well, but I think it would take some time to balance between to little or too much. Wouldn't want it to be too easy, but it definitely wouldn't be good if players had to give up too many skills. Certscould even be surrendered. Perhaps one way of doing the XP would be starting with a CL 10 droid and gaining some sort of use experience whenever it assists in combat.

Particular thanks to Kollos for further fleshing out and clarifying. I just hope this thread gets some attention. Feedback, positive or negative (well, at least as long as it contributes in some manner), is appreciated.

To be honest, I dont know why I didn't see this in the first place.

And you are right, kollos has fleshed it out a bit..i hope it gets more feedback.

I would advise never mentioning CH again though, there are some dreadful Trolls from that forum come here now and again. In fact if I was you I'd edit 'CH' from your post right now

This is probably the best compromise proposal I have seen yet.

Credit to Kollos for his expansion of the original idea as well.

not only droid eng. but maybe like bounty hunter after all they already have some droid use skill in the investigation tree

AsI understand it now wht he's actually saying is to give a place in every profession that can have a droid cert added, and just having it so that a droid engineer is the one who can add the droid cert for a skillpoint and XP cost

Is that how it's meant, or have a I misread it again?

Actually, I supose I should clarify this a little further. The way I see it, anyone would be able to get these droids at just about any level. There wouldn't actually be any Certs placed in any of the trees. They would simply have to find someone to train them in the Cert (and while initially I suggested that DEs automatically gain the Certs and would train other players in them, should people consider this unbalanced ... perhaps there could be a trainer people go to, whether it be a trainer specialized in this or a DE trainer). To gain the Cert they would also have to sacrifice an as yet undefined amount of Xp and Skill Points.

This way, they essentially wouldn't have to add any more coding to the skill trees other than DE. They would probably have to make some changes to the skill box (in order to make the Certs easy to find. I would also think it a good idea to make them surrenderable), though.

I hope this is more understandable.

Since Weissbrot's post, I've been searching around for suggestions like this one. So, if you're up for some additional reading:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=droid_engineer&message.id=57023

If the link doesn't work, the thread was on the third page last I checked (then again, considering that, it might be an indication of how much a response I'm going to see on this).

Cheers!
