Thread: Idea to make /medicalforage useful

Keep in mind this is just an idea, and I welcome any possible adjustments people might have to add to it. The main problem with getting a /survey skill is that this takes away from the skills of the Artisan. It would be the same as allowing artisans to use stimpacks without taking Novice Medic. The /survey and /sample skills are a key element of the Artisan profession. Here's what I propose.

  1. /medicalforage can have a resource name appended to it. If you know the name of a resource (ie Lokian Wild Wheat is called Toritee). You can then type /medicalforage [NAME] (example: /medicalforage Toritee). This will then look for just this named resource on the spot you're standing. Leaving the name off will result in a random resource pull.

  2. /medicalforage will return an amount of resource equivilent to 1/10th (rounding down) of the concentration. If you're standing on a 45% spot then it will return 4 units (0-9% returns 0, 10-19% returns 1, 20-29% returns 2, and so on...).

  3. /medicalforage will be opened to minerals, chemicals, and water. This will allow medics to search for all their needed resources to craft meds.

I believe that this does not overlap the Artisan skills, but is just an enhancement to the Medic skills. The Artisan is still required to get a name of resource. The names can be aquired by an Artisan using a survey droid and emailing the results to a Medic for a price. No waypoint is given to track the source of a resource spawn, just an 'idea' of the concentration the Medic is standing on. Just like with a /sample from the Artisan line, a failure to retrieve the resource is possible.

Let me know what you think.

well being a artiasan too this would not be anymore useful for me, but the idea has meret.

Don't know if it could be implemented (although it should be able to).

worth a go for our next correspendedt

This would make it possible for starting medics to actually find their own resources and craft their own meds without picking up artisan. It would not be of much use to the large-scale med producers who need to find high concentrations for their harvestors, but those players usually have the money to hire a surveyor anyway. One thing that I would add to your idea is to make the foraged resources stack.Right now, even if you get the same resource twice, the 2 units are not automaticaly stacked in your inventory.

I'll hand it to you, this isn't bad idea. It's an appropriate compromise because this will only tell you the concentration at that exact location, but doesn't clue us in as to which direction to head next.

The usefulness of this should be somehow limited so that it will always be weaker than the Novice Artisan /survey and /sample commands.

To balance the use of this:

  • the HAM drain should be considerable, or

  • the usage timing should be somehow tied to other medicine timers, or

  • the activity should induce wounds, or

  • some mix of the above, or

  • ...(fill in the blank)...

Making it cause wounds might be a bit harsh. It's already far inferior to /survey and /sample. Finding the name of a resource to forage would require some help (even if it's an outside site like swgcraft), and finding a high concentration would take some luck. Putting it on a longer timer than /sample seems reasonable though.

Part of my reasoning behind this is that with the new Stim Dispenser Droids. Meds are being taken out of the hands of Medics. True, a Stim Droid can't compare to a Medic in a combat situation, but I don't think this can compare to /survey and /sample. I like the idea of adding a timer on it, maybe a 30 or 60 second timer, or make it so you can /medicalforage only once at that spot. This would be most helpful when you see a flora harvester somewhere and you want to check the concentration of a flora you're looking for.

I would prefer to see that it returns you 8 units ofrandom organic or inorganic, to be used in the Stim A. I don't really see this as conflicting with the artisan sample because artisans only use sample for checking the attributes and possibly when only small quantities of a resource are needed. The randomness would make it undesirable to use for that purpose, but toally usefull for making Stim A's.

Allowing the selection of a resource would be pretty silly, because by the time you need lokian wheat, you really should have contracted an artisan to provide your resources, or taken up the skill yourself.

I believe this skill is merely to get medic's off the ground and able to heal people when starting out.
