Thread: Its a Docs Life. (Long) Is it for you?

Finally you've made Master Doc. Reflecting on what has transpired on your way up you have noticed a few things. Never has it been easier to get AP without having to hunt for it. Personally with my doc tag up I receive 2 or 3 requests to train on any given evening, including those who need the beefy (AP-wise) training for Master Medic and Master Doc.

I find myself in demand nearly any place I go, even if I make my character unsearchable. You will recieve constant tells in any populated places, most ask either for "a quick buff" or "can you heal me". Either can easily spiral to a 30 minute buffing frenzy as passers by notice your metal minion standing placidly at your side.

Your trusty medical droid, your companion, your crafting station and the biggest burden you will ever purchase. Once you take it out you can expect a flurry of requests for buffs.

If you for some reason are "searchable" you can expect tells for a wide range of services that you are somehow obligated to perform else you will be severly tongue lashed by incensed poisoned, diseased, wounded, unbuffed, or even dead adventurers. Most will be kilometers away from you and expect you to come to them...and be grateful for it!

If you are by some chance invited to join a group of "friends" to make battle on various and sundry enemies you can expect. To not get any loot, as youll be running around trying to heal (primarily) pets and group members. No one will even consider the costs that you are incurring on any given dungeon crawl. You can expect to part with hundreds of stim charges (primarily) on pets. You will be subjected to constants appeals in group and spacial chat to "HEAL!!!" not that you would be doing anything else during this time anyhow.

As a doctor you are some how expected, nay, obligated to gain absolutly no xp, credits, or neat loots, sacrificing them to your group. You will also be expected in any group of friends to buff them for free before any hunt. Never mind the fact that they themselves will greedily whore all of the loot, credits, and exp. And never once consider that you would maybe, perhaps like or actually need anything the group gains. They all will assume that you gain all of the credits you could ever need by wasting your time in some starport buffing.

Of course no one will realize that your buying all of the resources (at primium prices 10-100 cpu) you need as you sacraficed all of your scout/survey skill points to your medical and combat class.

As soon as you log on you will be barraged by tells from friends and aquaintences who have crawled deep into some god-forsaken grotto. They will be of the sort: "Hey man glad you to see you logged on, you gotta come and help us were dying here!" Where here is, is usually several planets away from where ever you are currently. Then you will be blessed by many and repeated tells of "Hows it going? Where are you at now?" "How long until you show up" and finally; "Great we'll start coming back up so you can buff us when you get here".

At the end of the day you will try to find a quiet spot to craft the stims/enhance kits you will need for the next day. During this time you will often have your droid out as he has your crafting station. Even trying to hide people will find you and start pestering you for buffs.

If you can live with all of this and be satisfied merely by credits earned from buffing and "Attaboys" from rezzed, healed, cured group members and buff reciepiants then this may be the profession for you. If thats not enough...

I daily consider just dropping doc cold turkey...surrendering all of my medical knowledge and chemical crafting skills and joining the throng of "those to be buffed".

Somehow we all need to train the public on just how inconsiderate they are to us about wound heals, cures and rezes.

Sadly, I dont think that its possible or even realistic to expect. Being a doc can be very rewarding but it does have its down side. Its just kind of important for new Docs to know what theyre getting into before they start so that they dont end up getting bitter about it and simply quit.

These issues arent really new, anyone accustomed to a healing character in any MMORPG will be familiar with them, the difference is that in this game becoming a Doc and all of the services you perform have a real quantifiable cost to you personally (your toon anyway). Unlike other fantasy RPGs where you just using manna or power, here your using pack that you buy or create.

I think a lot of the brashness of patients could be cured if every action cost them something. Like if you join a group do it on commission ahead of time, outline what you would like of the loot or maybe a percentage of the take as you will very seldom get to loot. I havent done this yet but I am considering it, right now I only take creds for buffs but Im considering taking a flat fee for heals and cures aswell.

Good Doctors, those that stick with it anyway are more often than not of the more mature type of player...and rightly so. I dunno. Just trying to think motivate myself to keep a profession that I do really enjoy but has become somewhat of a burden.

There is an easy way to get around the group problem with constant requests for healing. Its really simple actually. Just say in groupchat before you head out that "Yes, Iam a master doctor.I will rez you all, butIm not going to go out ofmy way to heal, andIm not buffing"

At this point you whip out your med droid and buff yourself.

Dang, you guys must have it bad. I've been a master Doc/4004 CM, and 0430 carbineer for a while now. Yes if I have a master doc tag on(my character is searchable) and I'm in theed/coronet, I'll get 2-3 tells very quickly when I fly in from people that want buffed. There has only been 1 occasion where someone asked me to fly to a different planet to rez (for a healthy 100k) and many PvP'ers fallin in combat will ask for a rez so they can continue fighting. If you were considering goin doc but the above post seems to discourage you, don't worry about it. Yes, you will be in demand, but it's not always that bad. Buffs seem to be the most common request, and if you aren't an "established" doctor and don't have a master doc tag on, you won't have to worry about it. If I see a person with a poison/disease, I usually just cure it (unless it seems to be a voluntary thing, i.e. mind diseases for entertainers).

As far as combat goes, you have plenty of skill points left, you can make yourself a very well-balanced combat profession or go up as a combat medic and be able to poison/disease things and be VERY good at group healing with ranged/area stims. At any rate, I started my path as soon as I started the game, and have loved master doc and CM too for a long time.

From what I've seen, the maturity thing is definately true, which makes all of the immature actions even more apparent than if we were like them ourselves. Gooney, what combat profession are you? I don't have problems with loot since I took up CM (4004) and carbineer.

I totally 110% agree with this post. I do anything within my power to keep enuf cash and not have to "squat-n-buff" in corenet or some other crowded spot. And, on my server..wanderhome, sweet buffs are only worth 6-8k. If you ask for 10k you get flamed and harrased lol. Im master doctor, and i make enuf cash from my vendor to stay in the profession. But mainly im just a doctor for me.

And...whenever we are in groups...the loot thing...yep, i know how you feel bud.

And...all of our so-called best buds that never knew us before we could buff that think they shouldnt have to pay or always get a discount. 50% of my character is doctor/ the rest goes for pure combat, so i dont have skills to harvest and barely enuf to survey, so i pay big bucks for my meat.

i think being a happy doc is being an assertive doc. if you lie down and be the dog of the group acquiescing to the needs of everyone else and forgoing your own, what kind of future treatment do you think you will get? if you want to be happy you need to lay down the rules of how you'll play and stick with them, if your "friends" don't like it, let them master doctor on their own. you don't have to be rude, but being firm is a must. otherwise you're just going to end up hating bein a doc but in reality you'll really just hate letting yourself get used. get used to the word NO, it makes a docs life so much easier.

Right now I'm a Master Pistoleer, its not that I cant kill anything but in the heat of battle with a big group Im more busy keeping people on thier feet than I am looting corpses. Theres usually someone that uses a loot macro or some such thing... Its not a huge issue just annoying and goes to the nature of a lot of players belief that somehow our healing them is our reward for joining them.

I am a MD. Right now I have novice TK with a few boxes and I am working on novice swordsmen. I will give up some TK as I get more swordsmen skills.

I always have novice scout and novice artisan. I wont have to give those up till I get closer to mastering a combat proffesion, and beccause I often master one then pick another i dont go very long without scout/artisan.

One hunts I get people to teach me up scout so I can harvest more hides, and then I surender at the end of the hunt. I pay close attention to the resource sites and when one pops I take my crappy level survey tool and i find a 80% spot and i am happy. I used my doc money to buy the best harvestors so now it's not a big deal to get stuff.

Whenever i am hard up for cash I sit in coro and buff, often i dont wear my tag so it keeps the tells away, or i put on an afk stating my price and YES i am buffing.

I only go on group hunts with REAL friends. If they arn't real friends then I expect A) to be socalized with and become freinds or B) PAYMENT. On big guild hunts I only go if another doctor goes, unless I am feeling horoic or adventures and dont want XP or a lot of meat.

I am perfectly happy. I GET my own resources, I can play any combat proffesion i want AND master it (you can just learn/unlearn sout or artisan and trade off, its very easy). I can make half a million in a few hours of play, or go kill jantas for better buffs (blood) and make money that way. Or go get missions for Herb/Avian and while getting my meat I make money to.

Life is good, doc is the best proffesion in the game!!!!!

Healing pets???
that is waht pet stims are for.
I am a MCH also and I hardly ever use my pets anymore.
as for the loot, my doc character cause he is not combat usually has looting duty in my guild since my only job in hunts it too keep people standing.

Resources, most people in my guild are more than happy to help me hunt avian and herb meat. And they go searching for other stuff being sold cheep and Give it to me (no charge) maybe you need a better guild.

I got no complaints.
