Posted this over on the Gorath forums, but thought you guys may want to take a look and maybe do this for your own servers.

I was recently looking at a chart of where the money that you use to buy a CD goes when I thought about where the money goes in the buffing industry. So, to figure out the money trail about buffs, and hopefully educate the public about where their money is spent when they /tip a Doc in Coronet, I've developed these simple questioners for the four primary groups in the industry: the miners/Rangers, the resource vendors, the crafting Docs, and the buffing Docs. If you fall into multiple categories, answer all the questions that apply.

---

CPU: Credits Per Unit
stats: The important stats for that resource. For meats it would be OQ/PE, mined resources it's OQ/UT (or PE at times).
resources: Meats or mined resources if there is no difference between the two or if it's already been defined.

The miners and Rangers:

This group is defined by the fact that they directly mine or harvest the resources, then sell them to another party, either directly to the crafting Doc, or to some resource middleman.

  1. Do you harvest meats or mine resources (if both, for prices, indicate which price is which)?
  2. If you mine resources, do you use lot swaps?
  3. If you mine resources, do you tend to go out and survey your own veins or do depend on others to find the spots?
  4. If you harvest meat, do you hunt specific creatures for a specific spawn of meat? (i.e. great Avian Meat spawned on Yavin, you switch to hunting the birds on Yavin until the spawn switches.)
  5. Do you tend to sell your resources directly to Doctor(s) or do you sell to a resource vendor(s)?
  6. Do you have an agreement about resources with a Doctor(s) or a resource vendor(s)?
  7. If you sell resources to directly to a Doc (if multiple Docs, the average):

    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for above-average to good resources (650-850 stats)?
    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for good to great resources (850-950 stats)?
    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for great resources (950+ stats)?

  8. If you sell resources to a resource middleman (if multiple vendors, the average):

    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for above-average to good resources (650-850 stats)?
    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for good to great resources (850-950 stats)?
    • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for great resources (950+ stats)?

  9. Do you tend to charge more or less (in terms of CPU) for what you consider large stacks of resources in comparison to what you conisder average sized stacks?

Resource Vendors:

The resource middlemen. This group doesn't directly harvest resources or make buff packs, but they act as an in between between the miners/Rangers and the crafting Docs. Please keep your answers pertinent to Doctor resources if possible.

  1. Do you tend to deal exclusively in meats or mined resources? If so, why?
  2. Do you have an agreement with a Doctor(s) about obtaining and selling them resources?
  3. Do you tend to advertise that you are buying a certain resource (i.e. spamming in Coronet Starport)?
  4. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

  5. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

  6. What prices (in CPU) do you tend charge on your vendors for meats of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

  7. What prices (in CPU) do you tend charge on your vendors for mined resources of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

Crafting Doctors:

This group makes buff packs as a business, they may also make packs for personal use as a buffing Doc, but the most important part of this group is that they sell buff packs.

  1. Do you have agreements with miners/Rangers or resource vendors regarding resources?
  2. Do you tend to make your own sub components?
  3. Are you a 11/12-experimentation point Doctor?
  4. Are you also a Combat Medic, if so, do you also sell Combat Medic items?
  5. Does the Doctor character also have Merchant (or at least xx3x Artisan) skill?

    • If Merchant and Doctor are not on the same character, do you have a Merchant alt or does someone else run your vendors?

  6. Are your vendors in a mall (or with a two or more non-related vendors)?
  7. Are your vendors near a major NPC city or in a player city?
  8. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

  9. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...

    • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
    • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
    • Great quality (950+ stats)?

  10. Do you attempt to match the Action buff to the other buffs in terms of power and duration?
  11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
  12. What price do you tend to charge for a set of buff packs you would consider average?

Buffing Doctors:

The end user. This group buys buff packs from the crafting Docs and then buffs the public at popular places like Coronet or Dantooine MOP, they may also buff themselves (maybe on accident) or guildmates.

  1. Are you a Master Doctor, if not what skills do you have in Doctor?
  2. Do you buff yourself or guildmates/friends in addition to the public?
  3. Do you tend to break a set (i.e. only buff one stat, like Quickness for an Entertainer) if asked?

    • If you do tend to break sets, does it matter which stat the customer asks for in determining if you do break a set (i.e. would you be more likely to buff action then quickness)?

  4. Do you have a favorite or preferred place to buff at?
  5. What stats do you look for when buying buff packs (charges, power, duration)?
  6. Do you tend to shop around or only buy from one Doctor?

    • If you shop around, what is the most important variable (stat or price) that you're looking for?

  7. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
  8. What price do you tend to pay for a set of buff packs that you consider average?
  • ADDED: How much would you charge your customers for a buff set you consider average?

Wow, a lot of questions here, but I'll bite. I fall under the category of a crafting doc.

    1) For meats I have a list of people that normally hunt for me. I also spam coronet sometimes when I'm not getting as much as I'd like from my regulars. For other resources I acquire them by mining myself, buying off various vendors, and auctions.

    2) I craft everything myself (except for those damn advanced dispersal mechanisms)

    3) 12 points

    4) No CM skills

    5) I have merchant 0001 on my other account. My doc is strictly a crafter/buffer and has dancer/musician skills.

    6)One vendor is in a player city/mall.

    7) I have another one south of coronet that does almost zero business. Player cities are where it's at.

    8) I really only buy high quality meats. For herb meat it's 50-70cpu and for avian it's 100-150cpu (in-shift). I try not to compete on price for in-shift meat. If another doc is offering more I'll usually let them, knowing that they will run out of credits in a day or two and I'll be able to buy for the entire shift. Most I have paid for meat out-of-shift was 400cpu, and about 300cpu for some 8 month old herb meat that I was really craving (only to be used in janta buffs, etc).

    9) 1-2cpu for grind quality resources, 4-25cpu for high quality resources. I don't bother with anything in the middle. The only time I would pay 25cpu would be for class-4. Most everything else tends to be 10-15cpu, but sometimes I get lucky.

    10) I always use different resources for action. I match the duration to within 3 minutes. With one type of meat I was able to match it to within 3 seconds on a recent factory run!

    11) 900+ power, 11000+ duration, 28+ charges as a minimum, which is average compared to other docs inventories on the server.

    12) Something like the aboveI would sell for 150k/set. The highest I go for crated buffs are 180k/set and that is for 910+ power 13000+ duration 30+ charges MU89.

I would like to add that my profit margin on buffs is usually around 3-4X. Which is really not a lot if you compare to other profs like armorsmith. I don't compete on price. I compete on quality and stock availability.

bored and at work ... why not ..

    Crafting Doctors:

This group makes buff packs as a business, they may also make packs for personal use as a buffing Doc, but the most important part of this group is that they sell buff packs.

    1. Do you have agreements with miners/Rangers or resource vendors regarding resources?
No, I have an alt ranger and I have a large stockpile of avian meat that I probably will never use up About six months ago when I was buying ... I would simply do searches for rangers as I saw them and gathered as much as possible while it was in shift with my little novice scout self ... and I was actually able to get a surprising amount ... I remember getting 7k of coro avian and being rather proud Plus now, I have a ranger alt

    2. Do you tend to make your own sub components?
My Boyfriend is a CM so between him and me we make all components

    3. Are you a 11/12-experimentation point Doctor?
      Yep

    4. Are you also a Combat Medic, if so, do you also sell Combat Medic items?
Will be soon as the boyfriend has dropped the game so I inherited a bunch of CM resources

    5. Does the Doctor character also have Merchant (or at least xx3x Artisan) skill?
      No, an alt

      • If Merchant and Doctor are not on the same character, do you have a Merchant alt or does someone else run your vendors?

    6. Are your vendors in a mall (or with a two or more non-related vendors)?
You could say that I have a med shop but most everything other than one buff vendor I've done on my own. I have a clothing vendor, BE clothes, components, loot, resources, scout/artisan,all medsas well as a med accessories vendor which includes droids, havla, batteries, bivoli, and crafting tools.

    7. Are your vendors near a major NPC city or in a player city?
      Player

    8. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

      • *sigh* These will be in shift prices out of shift is a whole 'nother ballpark

      • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)? wouldn't bother with avian, herb maybe 40cpu
      • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)? depending on if all 3 were that high, varies from 80-200 cpu also dependent on if its herb or avian
      • Great quality (950+ stats)? I'm scared to know what that would fetch on farstar considering DR=346 PE=951 OQ=981 is currently being auctioned at 450 cpu and startbid on some herb meat thats the best ever and was only in shift for 3 days is 300cpu :/

    9. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...
I mine all my own resources

    10. Do you attempt to match the Action buff to the other buffs in terms of power and duration?
No, but I might start soon

    11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
      25 charges, 850 power, 10k duration

    12. What price do you tend to charge for a set of buff packs you would consider average?
I don't make average I charge 300k for a set of 32 use/ 906-920 power/ 10k-12k duration packs ... and they sell out faster than I can put them up

I have 100 medium minerals that are all static lot swaps, and I also have around 80 lots to mine resources with
    3. If you mine resources, do you tend to go out and survey your own veins or do depend on others to find the spots?

I fit a couple of these, so here goes.

    The miners and Rangers:

Do you harvest meats or mine resources (if both, for prices, indicate which price is which)?

Harvest minerals and occasionally chemicals. Sell at auction for 3-8 cpu.

Also procure meats from time to time. More likely to buy and resell than hunt myself.

If you mine resources, do you use lot swaps?

No, I have 30 lots from my three toons and have put 22 BER13 mineral harvesters in a big static field. Tend to leave them in one place.

If you mine resources, do you tend to go out and survey your own veins or do depend on others to find the spots?

    Survey my own.

Do you tend to sell your resources directly to Doctor(s) or do you sell to a resource vendor(s)?

Meat, sell directly to doctors. Resources, sell at auction on the forums. Used to have a resource vendor but make more money with direct sales.

Do you have an agreement about resources with a Doctor(s) or a resource vendor(s)?

    Not currently

    1. If you sell resources to directly to a Doc (if multiple Docs, the average):

    Market price for organics.

    1. Do you tend to charge more or less (in terms of CPU) for what you consider large stacks of resources in comparison to what you conisder average sized stacks?
Same, unless a regular buyer offers a bonus for large stacks

    Resource Vendors:

    1. Do you tend to deal exclusively in meats or mined resources? If so, why?

Retired now but mostly sold mined stuff because meats were impossible to keep in stock. Sold meats when I got them.

    1. Do you have an agreement with a Doctor(s) about obtaining and selling them resources?

    no

    1. Do you tend to advertise that you are buying a certain resource (i.e. spamming in Coronet Starport)?

    no

    Buffing Doctors:

Are you a Master Doctor, if not what skills do you have in Doctor?

Master . Have been master, 4440, 0440, etc at various times on various toons.

Do you buff yourself or guildmates/friends in addition to the public?

yes Guildies jump the line and have no set price, but that's because my guildies are cool and they always pay. Often I give them part/all of it back.

Do you tend to break a set (i.e. only buff one stat, like Quickness for an Entertainer) if asked?

Yes, I'll do that. Stat unimportant. I buy my buffpacks 60 at a time anyway, a few more won't hurt.

Do you have a favorite or preferred place to buff at?

Almost exclusively at Dantooine mining outpost. Sometimes Coronet if Dantooine is packed with docs.

What stats do you look for when buying buff packs (charges, power, duration)?

The packs I'm buying lately are a nice balance between power, charges, and duration.

Do you tend to shop around or only buy from one Doctor?

Buy exclusively from VuuDuu Meds now, my guild vendor. Before Joining SK I bought from Pleco, Callyndra, Redfyree, etc. They're all top notch docs so I bought from whomever had the stock, price, and stats when I needed packs.

What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
Lately I've been using 850 power/3.6 hour duration packs from VuuDuu and they've been very popular.

What price do you tend to pay for a set of buff packs that you consider average?

I pay approximately 1.5 million for 10 full sets of buffs, so about 25k per pack (33 charges)

How much would you charge your customers for a buff set you consider average?

15k flat rate, regardless of power. My buffs are all the same. I use bivoli. Don't offer line jump (except for guildies)

    Crafting Doctors:

This group makes buff packs as a business, they may also make packs for personal use as a buffing Doc, but the most important part of this group is that they sell buff packs.

    1. Do you have agreements with miners/Rangers or resource vendors regarding resources?
I have a small harvester coop for machine harvestables. I have a list of hunters that I rely on for meats.
    2. Do you tend to make your own sub components?
I make all my own subcomponents. Though I am not opposed to buying them if the price is right.
    3. Are you a 11/12-experimentation point Doctor?
12-pt (working on FS experimentation lately)
    4. Are you also a Combat Medic, if so, do you also sell Combat Medic items?
Used to be, but gave it up before I became a crafting doc
    5. Does the Doctor character also have Merchant (or at least xx3x Artisan) skill?

        Merchant 3001 on same toon

      • If Merchant and Doctor are not on the same character, do you have a Merchant alt or does someone else run your vendors?

    6. Are your vendors in a mall (or with a two or more non-related vendors)?
I have found better luck with my vendor outside Theed than in the mall that I joined recently (in a player city). I suspect the several months of advertising my shop is hard to overcome.
    7. Are your vendors near a major NPC city or in a player city?
      Answered above
    8. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

      • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
I do not buy avian meat of this quality. I pay 5cpu for all herbivore meats (regardless of quality)
      • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
I pay 150 cpu for in-spawn avian if OQ+PE > 1700. I tend to pass on the out-of-spawn meats due to my cost/pricing structure.
      • Great quality (950+ stats)?
I suspect that my puny offering of 150cpu would not get much attention if avian of this quality spawned on Flurry. If so, I might have to consider augmenting my offer. Then again, it would be interesting to see how loyal my long-time meat suppliers might be in the face of 300cpu offers by some docs. It also greatly depends on the planet. I probably wouldn't get many takers at 500cpu for Rori or Tat avian. But Lok, Yavin, Dath - that is another story...

    9. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...

      • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
My mining coop harvests all machine harvestables for 3cpu. Quality does not matter.
      • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?

      • Great quality (950+ stats)?

For out of spawn resources of excellent quality (during drought times), I will buy some mined resources on auction. But that rarely happens enough to consider.

    10. Do you attempt to match the Action buff to the other buffs in terms of power and duration?
I currently use the same resources for all of my packs.
    11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
I would agree with most of the rest of the posters. MU90/850/2:45/30ch
    12. What price do you tend to charge for a set of buff packs you would consider average?
All of my packs are priced at 500 credits per dose. The buffing doctor's cost to buff is 3k per patient. I only deviate from that policy when making janta packs for special purposes. That doesn't happen much, I tend to not win a lot of janta auctions (too cheap I guess)...

They never were, but if I get back into selling meds they will be.
    7. Are your vendors near a major NPC city or in a player city?
    They were near Cnet
    8. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

    * Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)? Wouldn't buy it
    * Good to great quality (850-950 stats)? 30-150 CPU, depending on the resource
    * Great quality (950+ stats)? 50-300 CPU, depending on the resource type

    9. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...

    * Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)? Wouldn't buy it
    * Good to great quality (850-950 stats)? Wouldn't buy it
    * Great quality (950+ stats)? 25-200 CPU, depending on the rarity and how bad I need/want it

    10. Do you attempt to match the Action buff to the other buffs in terms of power and duration?
I always use Avian in my action buffs for consistancy... it's not so much more that I can't afford to.
    11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges?
For me? 900+ power, 11000+ duration, 30+ charges.
    12. What price do you tend to charge for a set of buff packs you would consider average?
EDIT: 100-120k for a set [first response was a misread of the question].

I do a lot of hunting as well as crafting so I answered in both groups.

    The miners and Rangers:

This group is defined by the fact that they directly mine or harvest the resources, then sell them to another party, either directly to the crafting Doc, or to some resource middleman.

    1. Do you harvest meats or mine resources (if both, for prices, indicate which price is which)? I am always harvesting something. If there are no good doc/CM resouces then I harvest what every the hot resouce of the week is.

    2. If you mine resources, do you use lot swaps? Nope. I target only high end resouces.

    3. If you mine resources, do you tend to go out and survey your own veins or do depend on others to find the spots? A friend surveys for me.

    4. If you harvest meat, do you hunt specific creatures for a specific spawn of meat? (i.e. great Avian Meat spawned on Yavin, you switch to hunting the birds on Yavin until the spawn switches.) I like to hunt and will hunt what ever is most effective for the resouces I am gathering.

    5. Do you tend to sell your resources directly to Doctor(s) or do you sell to a resource vendor(s)? For doc resouces I keep them or give them to new docs. For non doc resouces I give the resouce to who ever I buy my products from or who I owe a favor to. I dont sell them. For example, the wooly hid is going for 200 cpu on Flurry right now. I gave 15k away to an armorsmith friends. I like to barter more than sell resouces.

    6. Do you have an agreement about resources with a Doctor(s) or a resource vendor(s)? I have a resouce vendor friend. He lets me know what is hot and if there are no doc resouces to harvest then I harvest for him. In exchange he sells me old resouces at very low cost.

    7. If you sell resources to directly to a Doc (if multiple Docs, the average):

      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for above-average to good resources (650-850 stats)?

I give this stuff to new docs.

      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for good to great resources (850-950 stats)?
        I use it myself.
      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for great resources (950+ stats)?
      I use it myself

    Crafting Doctors:

This group makes buff packs as a business, they may also make packs for personal use as a buffing Doc, but the most important part of this group is that they sell buff packs.

    1. Do you have agreements with miners/Rangers or resource vendors regarding resources? I have a list of folks that hunt for me and I sent them an email when a spawn hits.

    2. Do you tend to make your own sub components? Always

    3. Are you a 11/12-experimentation point Doctor? 12point doc and CM.

    4. Are you also a Combat Medic, if so, do you also sell Combat Medic items? Only to those in my same faction. I would rather not have to heal my own poisons

    5. Does the Doctor character also have Merchant (or at least xx3x Artisan) skill?

      • If Merchant and Doctor are not on the same character, do you have a Merchant alt or does someone else run your vendors? I use a friends vendor

    6. Are your vendors in a mall (or with a two or more non-related vendors)? There is a WS vendor that is run by my friend who runs my med vendor but that is it.

    7. Are your vendors near a major NPC city or in a player city? NPC

    8. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for meats of...

      • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
If it is herb around 20 cpu.
      • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
        Herb 40 and avian 150.
      • Great quality (950+ stats)?
For avian I have paid up to 500 cpu.

    9. What prices (in CPU) do you tend to pay for mined resources of...

      • Above-average to good quality (650-850 stats)?
        I dont bother with these.
      • Good to great quality (850-950 stats)?
        2 cpu
      • Great quality (950+ stats)?
      5-10 cpu.

    10. Do you attempt to match the Action buff to the other buffs in terms of power and duration? Yes. I never use avian in action packs.

    11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges? 850/2:45/30

    12. What price do you tend to charge for a set of buff packs you would consider average? 100k per set.

    1. Do you harvest meats or mine resources (if both, for prices, indicate which price is which)? mine

    5. Do you tend to sell your resources directly to Doctor(s) or do you sell to a resource vendor(s)? I have direct sales and own my own vendor

    6. Do you have an agreement about resources with a Doctor(s) or a resource vendor(s)? no

    7. If you sell resources to directly to a Doc (if multiple Docs, the average):

      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for above-average to good resources (650-850 stats)? 2-3cpu

      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for good to great resources (850-950 stats)? 3-5

      • What price (in CPU) do you tend to charge for great resources (950+ stats)? 5-8, but long extinct resources may be upwards of 20-30cpu

    5. Does the Doctor character also have Merchant (or at least xx3x Artisan) skill? Alt has a vendor

      • If Merchant and Doctor are not on the same character, do you have a Merchant alt or does someone else run your vendors? ooops, see above

    6. Are your vendors in a mall (or with a two or more non-related vendors)? no, but will be soon

    11. What do you consider an average buff set in terms of power, duration, and charges? don't sell buffs, I sell the 'other meds' state cures, blankets, etc
